What Is It Like Living In Corpus Christi

What is it like to live in Corpus Christi, TX?

I think a lot of it depends on where you are from. I’m originally from New Jersey and I moved here from St. Louis, MO. I moved here in November of 2009 and my first reaction was “Hey… I like this wearing shorts and a t-shirt in December thing!” Within six months I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown and wanted to leave Texas altogether. This was a Facebook post I made on April 22, 2010 - 5 months after moving here:“Living in Texas is like living in a horror film amalgamation. It's like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Deliverance, Mansquito and Creep Show all rolled into one. FML.”A month later I ranted to my receptionist about everything I hated about south Texas that ended with “WHY DOES ANYONE LIVE HERE???”The roads are poorly maintained, we used to have annual water boil alerts that seem to have become quarterly, the cockroaches are unbelievably huge, the mosquitos are awful, the ants are worse and the culture shock is not to be underestimated if you’re not from Texas. I’m an atheist and a liberal and that describes very few people in the city or the state. It is also very weird to see the state flag everywhere and ubiquitous products in the shape of the state - Texans have developed love of state into a veritable cult. After about a year I started enjoying it more but only because I had found a community of likeminded people (mostly transplants like myself). The thing I like most about Corpus Christi is that it’s a big enough city for there to be some things to do but it’s not so big that it’s difficult to get to any of it. Apart from Spring Break and special events like the Beach to Bay Marathon I never worry about traffic seriously hindering my travel to any part of the city on a regular basis.I like that living near the ocean is way more affordable than any other place I’ve ever been. All that being said, I’m definitely not staying here long term.

What are the downsides of living in Corpus Christi, TX?

City council has had issues with water filtration plant for the last 20 yrs(?)…….not sure if it’s inbreeding with the city council or if who you know……..there’s also feral cat colony policy banning any sort animal control dept won’t do anything about……….they’ve reduced trash pickup days to once a week but raised utility services as well as getting fined for having bulk(tree limbs) on curb for more than 4 days before city schedule to pick up………..I don’t quite understand law banning distracted driving(texting, talking on phone holding it) when police officers have phones, radioes, computers=local radio talk show host Jim Lago made a commercial mocking callers when this was brought up= no one is above the law or they shouldn’t be……..

What is the best area of Corpus Christi to live in?

Depends on what you want. Southside has the most growth, but if you want to live in a mansion, you probably want to check out Ocean Drive. If you work at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, you might want to live in Flour Bluff. FB has the rep as the best school district, so you might want to live there for that reason, too. You can live in a condo on the island. The Island, Flour Bluff and some of the bay-facing homes are more susceptible to hurricane damage, too. The question needs to be more specific, like "I'm moving to town to work at XYZ, have lots of money and want to live near water. Where should I buy a house?"

What are the pro and cons of living in Corpus Christi Texas?

I lived in Corpus Christi for eight years, and really enjoyed it. It is large enough to have everything you could possibly want in the way of shopping, restaurants, clubs, etc. And of course, there's the beach! Yes, the summers are hot and humid, but there is almost always wind blowing, which makes it bearable. Winters are almost non-existent. There are a couple of great smaller towns close by...Port Aransas and Rockport being two...that are good places to get out of the city on the weekends. Really, the only "con" we found with living in Corpus Christi is that it's pretty far from anywhere else. And as for hurricanes, we only evacuated from one, Bret in 1999. Evacuation is a nightmare...if you ever have to evacuate leave early as possible and take back roads to go north. Avoid I-37! But all in all, I think Corpus is a great city in which to live. Go down for a visit and check it out, and good luck!

How safe is Corpus Christi, TX?

As in any medium sized city, it depends where you are and what time. If you are with a group downtown in the evening , near venues I feel safe, Near Water Street Restaurant areas, Shoreline drive on the Waterfront, T -heads, American Bank Center area, near museums. Concrete Theater, Malls etc, Mostly are panhandlers you might run into ( We have sign posted to give to local charity insted and you will find yellow parking meters to donate) Be sensible, As in any city this size ,I would not be walking around alone late at night , only when festival or crowds and police presence. All that being said I feel safe living here,
