Can any one tell me what the normal working hours are in the Construction Industry. What are the rules regarding Overtime and Weekly offs, Medical Leaves, Casual Leaves and Earned Leaves etc. Are the Indian Engineers treated with respect there?

Can a Chief engineer become a Captain?

hi lets not confuse you cheif engineer and captain are both head of a two different departments on ship but a captain is overall incharge on the ship.
Captain is basically incharge of the navigation department on ship he looks at overall operation on the ship from navigation to cargo work and overall maintenance of the ship, speaking of cheif engineer he is the head of the engineering department which look after main and auxiliary engines and other machinery onboard from engine room to deck.
speaking of your question can a chief engineer can become a Captain on ship might not be possible because it involves lots of training and certication to become a cheif engineer or a Captain both of them needs different set of training from the start of a persons maritime career and a persons has to go through a set of examination to become a Captain of cheif.
A Captain should have a sound knowledge of navigation and ship operation thats why he iz called a master nd a chief engineer should have engineering knowledge to perform his duty to look after engineering aspect of the ship.

Carpenter vs Civil engineering Technician?

Well from my experience, a civil eng tech would be heavily involved in computer aided drafting and or some computer design. I don't know any civil eng techs that would compare their job description to carpentry. Geotechnical enginering techs get out in the field most and do the concrete sampling and soil sampling. They would also get lab time in by testing the samples. Contruction engineers or stake pounders go out and set grades (set stakes in the ground to the design grade) and finish grades on earth moving and paving projects.
A civil engineering tech that has taken the computer design courses to become proficient can expect to work in an office environment with a steady 40 hours of work each week, year round.
Check out the texas a&M university website, under construction technology. It gives a break down on its 4 year program. They have a two year program as well. A local junior college for a two year program in computer aided design. Construction companies doing earthmoving, and highway projects would be the field experience.

Is Mechanical Engineering a good degree to get?

Mechanical engineering is a VERY broad discipline. Design, Bio-mechanics, control, CAD, Energy, Micro systems, Mechanics of materials and Dynamics are just a few. I advice you to search a field which seems interesting to you, read about it, and see if you like it. Watch some youtube videos - they almost help demonstrate simple processes.
