Of course you will pay steep premium for beachfront property.A half hour/ 45 minutes drive either north, south or east brings you to slightly larger cities. Saugatuck/Holland to the north, Michigan City to the south and Kalamazoo to the East. Kalamazoo is a University town so it has the nightlife options that go with that. Holland is both a fancy beachfront town and a prosperous industrial center.If you want to be in the country, the region due east of St. Jo is predominantly rural and is dotted with all sorts of small lakes. Plenty of "cottage" style lake homes there.Finally, I have to put in a pitch for my home town. It is a little far but in my opinion Grand Rapids is about as good of place to live as there is.
