What Is The Meaning Of John Newman S Song Tribute

A Beautiful Mind - Why do they give him their pens as a tribute?

The scene at the end where each of the professors walks up to John Nash (Russell Crowe)and present him with their pen. What is the significance of that gesture? It obviously meant a lot to them all.

Which modern song could compare to Lennon's "Imagine"?

That's really a tough one. "Political" songs (and issues of war and peace are nothing if not political!) tend to have one or more of the following weaknesses: they become instantly dated if they reference a specific issue or incident; they risk coming off as preachy or self-satisfied, appealing only to listeners who already feel the same way and turning off everybody else; or they are so focused on the political point that the musical aspect is pretty much neglected; or, if they're intended to be sung by large groups in public, they can get too nursery-rhyme-ish or sing-songy with their melodies.Getting past these pitfalls to create something that is truly memorable, inspiring and timeless is extremely difficult. Now obviously rap music and hip-hop have, from the very beginning, had a strong political component. I'm not familiar enough with current hip-hop to pick a good example, so I'll have to include Grandmaster Flash's "The Message" from 1982. I think for me the songs that work the best are somewhat vague in their lyrics (so as not to get too tied to a particular moment in time) and appeal to the compassionate feelings inside each of us ("the better angels of our nature" as Lincoln put it). Something like "Everybody Hurts" from REM.There's also "Shipbuilding" by Elvis Costello. Although it was written in response to the Falklands War, its point just as well to pretty much any point in history. On the other hand, this song is about a specific issue (urging freedom for Nelson Mandela from prison) but transcends that because the music and passion behind it are so irresistible. And it really had some political impact (I must admit it wasn't until this song that I became familiar with who Mandela was--he had been in prison for 23+ years by then). I like a lot of political songs that are satiric. Randy Newman excels at these. Not exactly crowd sing-along material. Here's a little history lesson called "The Great Nations of Europe."And while we're at it, I have to include his summary of American foreign policy too!I wish I could find something more modern that could compare to "Imagine," but I couldn't really think of any. I hope you get some good responses.

What’s the saddest song you’ve ever heard?

The Ballad of Sam Stone (There's a Hole in Daddy's Arm) by John Prine:Sam StoneCame homeTo his wife and family After serving in the conflict overseas. And the time that he had served Had shattered all his nervesAnd left a little shrapnel in his knee. But the morphine eased the painAnd the grass grew 'round his brainAnd gave him all the confidence he lackedWith a Purple Heart and a monkey on his back.(chorus)There's a hole in daddy's armWhere all the money goesJesus Christ died for nothingI suppose.Little pitchers have big earsNever stop to count the years.Sweet songs never last too long on Broken radios.Sam Stone's welcome home Didn't last very longHe went to work when he'd spentHis last dime. And Sammy took to stealin'When he got that empty feelin'For a hundred dollar habitWithout overtime. But the gold rushed through his veinsLike a thousand railroad trainsAnd eased his mind in the moments that he chose,While the kids ran 'round wearing other people's clothes.(chorus)Sam Stone was alone When he popped his last balloon.Climbing walls while sitting in his chair. And he played his last request In a room smelled just like deathAnd an overdose hoverin' in the air.But life had lost its fun,And nothing could be done,'Cept to trade his house he got on the GI BillFor a flag-draped casket on a local heroes' hill.(chorus)

Why didn't John Cleese and Leon Russell perform at the Concert for George?

it would have been great to have all of monty pythom there, george was a big reason for their sucess. and yes, especially leon. it would have been great to have the whole bangledesh band on stage again. that concert george put on was the first of it's kind, and one of the most famous concerts ever. that would have been more of an honour to george than a bunch of other guys, (outside of the wildburys and the beatles) playing his songs.
get leon, eric, bob, ringo, badfinger (those who are with us still) , billy could have been there.........get everyone and donate the proceeds to one of george's favorite charities. dahni would have been behind it.
