What Is The Most Overrated Band/artist From The 1970

Most overrated artists/bands on your mind? Most underrated?

Can't really comment on overrated other than Nickelback which doesnt deserve to be called music. Although Nirvana was a great band, they had too much hype esp. after Cobain's death.

As for underrated, I think Queen during the 1970s, their prog music was overlooked by their later pop and synth work.

Also Cream and Deep Purple I think were overlooked.

What is the most overrated band of the 70s?

For me, it's the Eagles. The Eagles is a band that has a whole bunch of virtuosic musicians with great pedigrees, but it all seems to add up to much less than the sum of its parts. When it comes to country rock, they were neither as ahead of the curve as late period Byrds or the Flying Hot Burrito Brothers nor as hard rockin' as Lynyrd Skynyrd or Neil Young. The British novelty act the Heebeegeebees did a hilarious Eagles parody, "Dead Cicada," under the pseudonym the Beagles, which sums up for me why I can't stand the Eagles 1970s "I'm so laid back I'm gonna fall over" sound.

Who is an overrated blues artist?

Stevie Ray Vaughan is by far the most over-rated blues artist of this generation. Dying young has a way of boosting your career, as cruel as it sounds. I don't care how many guitarists take umbrage at my answer. Taste is subjective and to me, SRV was nothing more than a good guitar technician who was an amalgam of Otis Rush, Albert King, Buddy Guy and Albert Collins. Lots of sizzle and very little steak. Add to that all of the classic rock airplay SRV still receives and the endless clones like Kenny Wayne Shepherd and it goes beyond boring.

Under-rated would be Magic Sam, since I'm on the electric bluesmen. He pioneered the West Side sound of Chicago, quite different from the established south side.

Heck, I can toss in the virtually unknown Robert Pete Williams, who was very abstract with his songs. He was a good performer and singer on acoustic guitar whom I saw live quite a few times in the 1970s. Snooks Eaglin was a world class local player in New Orleans, as is Eddie Cotton, Jr. in Jackson, MS. Eddie just doesn't get out of town much.

Who is the most overrated music artist today?

Shawn Mendes. And no, I’m not trying to bash him or anything, this is just my opinion. He’s an excellent musician and singer (otherwise he wouldn’t be so succesful)but I think the obsession with him kinda has gone a little to far; even though I enjoy some of his songs (Mercy, Stitches, and Roses), I don’t find his music particularly exciting or new. His only main topic of his songs is about love. It is something the music industry has seen before, and, again in my opinion I think it’s getting pretty dull. Also I also think the reason to his major succes has partly somthing to do with his good looks.Take Melanie Martinez for example: Her style and songwriting is really unusual, new and exciting. The music industry needs new, inspiring artsist like her.I personally love her album Crybaby, and look forward to more of her work!

Which music artists are overrated/underrated?

Overrated-Justin Bieber-DrakeUnderrated-Josh Bogert-Aviva Mongillo-Astrid S.*The Underrated artists are really good. They have beautiful voices, and amazing songs. Unfortunately, they are not that well known. Also, Josh Bogert and Aviva Mongillo both act as well, and they are amazing at it.

What are the most overrated musicians and bands in history?

Oh man, Radiohead for sure. Right at the top of my list. Either they suck, really bad, or I just never got them. I know a lot of people that think they are the best thing since the Beatles. Or Zep. Whoever the benchmark is. I find them uninspired and boring. A lot of people I respect think they are amazing. I just don’t get it.White Stripes, my God if I hear another person asking how to emulate Jack White on guitar.. uhh, let me see, maybe if your hands were paralyzed and you were tone deaf, huh? Maybe then?U2 in the modern era - OK, the old days of War and Boy were pretty cool, I would argue even groundbreaking in their own right. But there’s just NO WAY they deserve the adulation they get today, just because they are still around.Chicago in the 80’s.. I don’t know what happened to that funky 70’s band that used to be Chicago. But in my era they were dead or missing in action. All I remember is Peter Cetera. Ugh.Guns n Roses - Literally made me give up on music for a while when they got successful. What the hell, we already had one AC-DC, wasn’t that enough? Appetite For Destruction was pretty good, if not particularly original, but man did things get worse from there, culminating in an uber- pretentious “November Rain”, and cover of Wings’ “Live and Let Die”.I second the vote for Nirvana - take away Butch Vig’s production and all you have is the out of tune warbling of Kurt Cobain. Heart Shaped Box, uggh.Rolling Stones: why? Another band I should have really been into, because I love the blues. I just never got the Stones - I’m not a huge Who fan but I always thought they were way better. They don’t do anything for me.

Are The Ramones the most overrated band ever?

In no way are The Ramones the most overrated band “ever”.When The Ramones came on the New York scene, there had been successful pre-punk in the US., including Patti Smith in New York, The Stooges in Detroit, and the MC5 (also in Detroit, obviously). Although some of the bands tended to be arty and even pretentious, others were a bit more stripped down and occasionally soulful. The Ramones admired the pre-punkers, but they also loved pop and garage music of the 50s and 60s. They were AM radio kids who wanted to bring back some of the vibe of the music they loved.Fortunately, they failed in their efforts to some extent. Johnny was a great musical director but a limited guitarist. Didi was an ok bass player but played a brilliant role as the dreamer of the band. As most people know, the group went through a series of drummers, some of whom made more contributions than others. And Joey was the most brilliant frontman who never wanted to be frontman that one could imagine. This kept them from replicating the Surfaris, Wayne Fontana, or The Ronnettes. The Ramones could do two things brilliantly, however. First, they could write songs that were great in quality and in number. The shear volume of output in the first few years of the band is spectacular. Second, they could perform them simply and earnestly. There are no licks that pay homage to great bluesmen of the 40s. There are no basslines designed to follow patterns laid down by Bach. There are very few modulations of any kind (second verse, same as the first). Without pretense, the songs speak for themselves. What this produced was one of the great “grand slams” (4 great albums in a row by a single artist) in rock and roll history - if not the greatest. The first 4 Ramones albums are on par with Beatles from Help! to Sgt. Peppers, Dylan’s 2nd through 5th, and the first 4 Talking Heads albums. The Velvet Underground may have been a better band, but their LP output was not that consistent. Same with Joni Mitchell in her heyday. Even Neil Young, the king of prolific artists, didn’t have a grand slam period. First ballot hall of famers like Chuck Berry and Elvis released singles, with LPs as afterthoughts. The Ramones were not just America’s greatest punk band - they were one of America’s greatest rock and roll bands of any era.

Most overrated band from each decade ('60s to 2010s)?

'60s: The Monkees
'70s: Eagles
'80s: Journey
'90s: Pearl Jam
'00s: Kings of Leon
'10s: One Direction (the fact that they're a well-received "band" makes them overrated)

What Are The Most Overrated Songs From The 70s & 80s?

1. Don't Stop Believin' (I don't care if it is Journey or the Glee cast, I wished they would just stop singin')
2. Summer Love (from "Grease")and Paradise by the Dashboard Light (Meatloaf) both tie as two really long songs sung by drunk, out-of-key people at Karaoke and piano bars.
3. Piano Man (Billy Joel) and Sweet Caroline (Neil Diamond)--people these singer/songwriters did write and record other great tunes--PLEASE, PLEASE pick something ELSE. Okay Sweet Caroline came out in 1969, but it was extremely popular in the early 1970's and has joined the songs at #2 for obnoxious bar/store Muzak tunes
4. Escape-The Pina Colada Song (Rupert Holmes) and Margaritaville (Jimmy Buffet) I get them confused. They both have drinks in them.
5. The Humpty Dance (Digital Underground)-Came out in 1990, but it seems like it's been around FOREVER. Middle-aged suburbanites dancing to this like rhythmless zombies--MY EYES! MY EYES! And my ears! Sampled by many other rap/r&b artists.
6. Sir-Mix-a-Lot's Baby Got Back (1992-but like the above--seems like forever) I notice that only women with no backside at all seem to dance to this--desperately shaking what their mamas clearly did NOT give them.
7. And "Thriller" by Michael Jackson. His best album, but not his best song, along with the Paul McCartney collaboration of "This Girl is Mine" from the same album.
8. Mr. Roboto (Styx). This is your brain on drugs. Or it should be to listen to this song and like it.

I agree with the other choices as well. Some of them really aren't bad songs, just they need to go away quietly for awhile. A long while.
