Why are women in ads used to attract male consumers, but men are not used in ads to attract female consumers?

In ads seen by both men and women, indeed women show up more than men do, as a general rule. It is generally assumed that especially men are not attracted by the image of other men, whom they look at as "competitors" in the work, love and sex arena - and hope to do something different, to stand out in that arena. (It is so much generalizing, some might even find it offensive when I put it like this.)Women, however, are interested in the imagery of other women. They tend to copy other women's behavior and choice of products - something most ads with persons in it are aiming at. Another factor comes into play, being that for many products that are advertised in common media, women are the bigger buyer group. Think food, clothes, furniture, books, magazines, etcetera. Combined with the idea of "copying behavior" enhances the use of images of women using the product. And then ofcourse, there are those adds that are mainly in the eyes of women (appearing in women magazines, etc.) and those mainly seen by men (ibidem). In those cases the ad designer could chose another approach, for which the other answers have given some examples. They are the exceptions that prove the rule.(Let me stress for one more time that this explanation of the general case is generalizing a lot, and can not be understood to  devaluate either men, nor women in general, nor the very person who would object my  answer.)
