What Is The Top Speed Of The Porsche 918

What is a Porsche supposed to be?

To really understand porsche you gotta look at their product range.

the lowest tier porsche is the Boxter. it competes with the entry level BMW Z4 and Mercedes SLK.
the Cayman with the mid tier SLK and top end Z4, they cayman also stretches a bit into lotus elise territory.
the 911 is the flagship of the brand and has the largest performance range.
it ranges from top end SLK to an Audi R8 V10 range.

the Panamera competes with the Maserati Quattroporte and Aston Martin Rapide.

the cayenne with the BMX X5 and Mercedes M class. (a bit with the Jeep SRT-8)

now the main thing about porsche is that they are a sports car brand.
with just plain luxury brands like Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Lexus you see a wide product range that covers compact, midsize and full size sedans and suvs with varying levels of sports cars too.

companies like ferrari and lamborghini dont really stick to that mentallity. they offer cars in whatever range they please. porsche just happens to do so at a lower level.

other than the 911 turbo s, porsche doesnt really compete with lamborghini and ferrari much.

with the 918 spyder the actively comete against Ferrari's LaFerrari and Mclaren's P1.
it was preceded by the carrera gt which competed a bit against the ferrari enzo but mostly the lamborghini murcielago and other hypercars of the time.
there was also the 959 which competed against the F40.
so while their hypercars may be very rare its not like they are in a completely lonely segment of their own.

porche is like ferrari or lamborghini. they are unique. they dont really fit in but at the same time they do. personally i think porsches are a bit overpriced but i havent yet had the chance to drive one and see its this is actually true or not.

How much those a 2012 porche cost?

Go to ww.porsche.com to check out the different models and their prices but normally from 55k-202k. Look at magazines like Motor Trend, Automobile, and Car and Driver to get specifics on the Porsche you want, so you know how the Porsche drives. I wouldn't recommend a Porsche 911 if you enjoy a nice easy drive cause they're bad-***, they fight you every time you step on the gas and I'm not joking!

What is the top speed of the fastest porshe?

The fastest road legal Porsche is the Porsche 918 supercar. Its current version makes 887 horsepower and 944 lb-ft of torque. The front wheels even have their own electric motor which is supposedly rated at 127 horsepower. The factory claims about 12 miles of electric cruising, 0 to 60 mph: 2.5 seconds. Top Speed: 214 mph.

Are McLaren going to come up with an other top speed record breaker like the McLaren F1?

It is very unlikely for several reasons.First achieving a high speed is very much dependent primarily on horsepower. That is because of air resistance which goes up exponentially relative to the speed of the car. So the faster you are going the more air your displacing. When the F1 came out it was in a class by itself in terms of horsepower.Second, you also need aerodynamics. Both because you want to cut through the air and also because you want to keep the car stable. Aerodynamics have progressed a tremendous amount since the F1 specifically around diffuser design and how air passes underneath a car. This means that as you increase grip you also reduce speed. You want the car to go faster you have to decrease down force but this will make the car unstable. When the F1 came out it was in a class by itself in terms of horsepower, price, and it wasn’t really looked at like a track car nor was it evaluated that way.Third was the price tag. The original McLaren F1 was one of the most expensive cars at the time. It was truly in a class by itself and it’s record breaking speed as a result of it’s massive horsepower and great aerodynamics stood unchallenged for over two decades. When it was beaten it was by the Bugatti Veyron. A car that has no racing pedigree unlike the F1 GTR which won in Le Mans, had a $1MM price tag, and 1,000hp.While the Bugatti in itself was a rarity at the time when it debuted you can now find several cars that are in the $1MM+ price range. The market for these cars have evolved. They all have nearly the same hp, but aerodynamics and drive play a much larger role.So you can certainly make a record breaking top speed car but you will sacrifice a lot. You will also not be the only entrant in the field was the F1 was in it’s day and the Bugatti Veyron 20 years later. You can also see this in the F1 GTR which has a massive rear wing and more refined aero. This sacrifices top speed but improves handling especially when you are going 200+ mph.The F1 was a car that was in it’s own market. Largely because at the time the market didn’t exist. Now you have the Ferrari LaFerrari, McLaren P1, Porsche 918, Koenigsegg, Pagani, and many other entrants. The McLaren F1 is certainly special. It did some things that no one else at the time did. But also, no one else at the time was even thinking of doing. But today, there are close to 10 car manufacturers in that “hypercar” space.

If one was looking to build the fastest car possible (top speed and acceleration), which drivetrain should be used and why: electric or internal combustion?

Neither. (Edit to clarify: I presumed, perhaps incorrectly, that the OP means reciprocating piston engines. Turbofans are internal combustion engines, too.)The current land speed record holder is the Thrust SSC, powered by two Rolls Royce turbofans.http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/T...Thrust SSC holds the World Land Speed Record, set on 15 October 1997, when it achieved a speed of 1,228 km/h (763 mph) and became the first car to officially break the sound barrier.(Edit to add: Thrust SSC Supersonic Boom: )Further edit to expand:Both McLaren P1 and Porsche  918 Spyder are hybrid supercars.http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/P...http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/M...Here they are head to head (sort of) at Anglesey:McLaren P1 v Porsche 918 Spyder. Which is fastest…:

Why is the Ferrari Laferrari restricted to a top speed of 220 mph? It has more than 900 hp, and I am sure it can go much faster, in spite of the high down force it generates?

Because of thisI can't find the quote, but the former chairman, Luca Di Montezemolo said that Ferrari can be the fastest, and has been, but is not going for that right now. I suspect that they are no longer interested because they can't beat Bugatti. Had they made the top speed of the Laferrari higher, people compare it to the Veyron’s and it would lose every time. Instead people now compare the acceleration and lap times, where the Laferrari comes out on top and looks like the better car.Laferrari (Road and Track times)0–60 mph - 2.41/4 Mile - 9.7 at 149.2 mphGrip - 1.16 GThermal Club Raceway (With Salamondorin) -1:18.46Top Speed - 217 mphBugatti Veyron Supersport (Road and Track times)0–60 mph - 2.51/4 Mile - 9.9 at 145.8 mphGrip - 0.99 GThermal Club Raceway (With Salamondorin) - 1:23.01Top Speed (Previous World Record) - 265.7 mphNow, the Laferrari is in danger of losing its advantages thanks to -The Bugatti Chiron

Porsche: Can someone place the models from fastest to slowest?

These rankings are based on rough speed around a track (you'll get different results based on different kinds of contests)... and assuming paved surfaces (The Cayenne, Juniors and Jadwagons aren't included here, but all would beat just about anything here given the right contest); one of or limited cars like the 989 or 914-8 aren't inlcuded... motorsports models are marked with *, fastest to slowest:

Last note - the upcoming LMP1 car will top this list as soon as it's introduced. The Indy cars aren't included given their limited use and ability to compare to other models... likewise the Tag Mclaren MP4/3 isn't included since Porsche only made the engine (if included it would probablu fit in near the WSC95).

Why do people think Bugatti's are the greatest cars?

A lot of people that know NOTHING about cars act like a Bugatti is the greatest car ever. Their handling is nowhere near as good as a GTR or Porsche 911. Also it costs at least a million to buy (some for way more) depending on which one you get. Why not buy a Porche 911 for 10% of what you'd get a Bugatti for? Also I know it's fast but.... It takes 2 years to get to its top speed. If you say its the greatest car, then you know nothing. I can think of 100 different cars that can get around a race track faster than it. A Volkswagen beetle could even destroy it on a straight away if it was tuned properly, especially since the bugatti weighs so much..... Please tell me why people thinks its so great...
