What kind of instrument the piano is?

The piano is both a chordophone (an instrument where strings produce their sound by means of a resonating chamber) and a PERCUSSION instrument. The strings of a piano are hit with hammers. Hitting is the criterion for percussion (irrespective whether it is a string, a piece of wood, a sheet of brass or a slice of other tuned metal which is struck).

A xylophone isn't a woodwind instrument because it has wooden bars, nor is a gong a brass instrument because it is made of brass. In this same way, a piano is NOT classified as a string instrument just because what is 'percussed' happens to be a set of tuned strings.

What Kind of Instrument do you play?

In my recording studio i would have to say that the keyboard is the heart and soul of most songs. Mine is the Yamaha Motif ES6. I use it to create the drum patterns as well as the piano, orchestra, and organ sounds. Since I don't play the harp, I often use my keyboard to emulate that sound. I love it for horns, strings, and the oboe.

I also enjoy using a wide variety of guitars. I use Fender Telecaster and Stratocaster, Gibson Les Paul Standard, and my Breedlove electric/acoustic. I use a Dean Vendetta Bass. I have recently added the Dobro resonator guitar, the mandolin and lap steel guitar to my arsenal. And though I haven't found much practical use for it, I enjoy strumming on my Ukulele.

What kind of instrument the piano is, exactly, turns out to be a complicated question. That’s because the piano, like many other keyboard instruments, is a hybrid. It is a kind of string instrument, yes; but it is also a kind of percussion instrument. The fairly rigorous Hornbostel-Sachs system of classifying musical instruments, first published in 1914, includes the piano in the chordophone family, meaning that it is considered a string instrument.Specifically, the piano is described as a type of “board zither” with a resonator box (314.122) meaning that the sound is produced by the vibration of tuned strings stretched tightly across a flat surface and amplified by a resonating chamber, making the piano a very close cousin to the dulcimer — but distinguished from, say, a guitar, which has a neck, or from a concert harp, in which the strings do not traverse a board. That the vibrations of the strings are produced by the percussive action of hammers, which are in turn activated by the percussive action of fingers on a keyboard, is really an afterthought according to the Hornbostel-Sachs system. But it’s of primary importance to pianists, whose physical interface with the instrument is entirely percussive. This is why the piano is a member of the percussion family of the orchestra, for instance. So if you’re talking about how the sound waves are produced and how resonance is created, then the piano certainly is a chordophone, or string instrument. But if you’re considering how the piano is operated by the user, then you’re essentially dealing with a percussion instrument.

What type of instruments do you play?

- piano
- violin
- viola
- harp

....and I take voice lessons. Piano is my main instrument, and voice is shortly going to be my official 2nd instrument. Previously, violin was my 2nd instrument (did up to grade 8 on it. Could've gone on, but I decided to try something different.) However, I love the sound of the viola and harp a lot. That's why I picked them in the first place. I used to play with my school's handbell choir too.

Guitar, it is the most versatile of all.Bit of a disclaimer, I have played guitar for 37 years. You have options, similar to the keyboards, of acoustic or electric. The portability of an acoustic guitar makes any occasion a potential party.Whether friends are over, you're camping around the fire, Christmas carols, or just chilling out, the guitar is handy and ready to accompany you. The accessibility for amateurs is important. Most instruments take insane amounts of practice to play, and sound, competent. With guitar, a few "cowboy chords" will net you thousands of songs to sing along to.With electric, some simple effects and processing, limited only by your personal budget, open a world of possibilities to explore. You can get lost in endless soundscapes and emotions.Chicks dig it...let's be honest.
