What Kind Of Muscle Protein Should I Get

Whey Protein or Muscle Milk?

Whey is great for pre and post workout supplementation due to its fast uptake properties. With whey, more aminos are made present at once which is desireable at those times. However, it's not as great other times of the day when you want a more slow-released protein. Muscle milk is a blended protein which is better at these other times. It will work pre and post workout but not as well as whey.

Whey is typically made available in the bloodstream around 45 minutes after ingestion. Blended proteins are available up to 2-3 hours after ingestion. Muscle milk also contains some carbs so you'll need to take that into account.

Most wheys coming from reputable brands are comparable. I personally like the ON Optimum brand.

Edit:

Look at the ingredients, MM does contain whey concentrates but other types of proteins as well:

EvoPro™(Calcium And Sodium Caseinates, Milk Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Concentrate, Whey Peptides, Lactoferrin, L-Glutamine, Taurine), LeanLipids™(Medium Chain Triglycerides, Sunflower And/Or Safflower Oil, Canola Oil, L-Carnitine), Maltodextrin, Resistant Maltodextrin, Fructose, Natural And Artificial Flavor, Chocolate Cookie Pieces, CytoVite I™ Vitamin And Mineral Blend, Potassium Chloride, Fructooligosaccharides, Acesulfame Potassium, Sucralose, Soy Lecithin

It's a BLENDED protein, not just whey protein. The most common type of protein most people associate with protein powders is whey isolate. This contains whey isolate PLUS whey concentrate, milk protein isolate and caseinates.

To the person who gave me a negative rating, I wasn't trashing MM, I think it's an excellent blended protein, just not necessarily appropriate for pre and post workout supplementation. For one, whey is more immediately readily available to the body than MM, making it better during those times. Also, you don't want to take any fats immediately after a workout as they slow gastric emptying. MM is great at other times of the day when you don't want straight whey.

How much protein should be eaten a day to maximize muscle building?

Building and repairing muscleHow much protein is needed for maximum muscular growth? Beginning bodybuilders are often confused as to how much crude protein they should be consuming on a daily basis. The average amount recommended in bodybuilding and advanced fitness books is 80 grams per day. This has been accepted as “staple truth” for many decades, until sport scientists began looking at how our bodies utilized protein when the muscles are under stress. Current studies suggest that if you’ve been consuming just 80 grams or less of crude protein per day, you may have been eating too little to encourage maximum muscle growth. It appears that in order to truly maximize the growth potential of all your major muscle groups, you need to consume at least 1 gram of protein for every pound of your current body weight. For more information check out my FREE ebook you can download here [1]I have seen many bodybuilders who gradually increase their protein intake as they slide up the intensity of their workouts (sometimes 50%-70% their initial protein intake) and they get wonderful results. Why do we need so much protein in your diet? Protein is one of the most essential building blocks needed by the human body for normal function. Our bodies literally cannot grow without protein. That’s why people who are not able to consume protein regularly often suffer from protein malnutrition and they look bloated because their body cells do not have sufficient protein for normal production of cellular walls, which keep water inside the cells.Bodybuilders are a special class of fitness buffs because they engage in demanding activities that put intense strain on the muscle fibers. Muscle fibers are built with protein; that’s how it has always been in the Animal Kingdom. Logically speaking, if you want your muscles to grow in size while you are applying regular stress and strain, you need to feed them more with the right type of nutrient. Our bodies utilize all 3 macro-nutrients for energy but only protein satisfies the requirement for physically rebuilding and repairing muscle fibersFor more information check out my free e book you can down load right here

Can you get  muscle mass  without using protein shakes and other kinds of supplements?

Maybe the guys are sponsored by protein companies ( a lot of fitness people are nowadays) or they believe it is necessary because their friends told them they are. I used to waste so much money on protein powder and then I moved to Italy and protein powder is so expensive and I decided to just get protein from foods. I made a lot of muscle gains just by doing heavy barbell squats, deadlifts, and other heavy lifting with proper macros from protein, carb, and fat. I am able to get 200 g of protein easily from every day foods that are high in protein. There is absolutely no reason to buy protein shakes or supplements unless you have trouble meeting your protein macros from your daily diet. You can learn more about protein and muscle building from this detailed video below and you can find a lot of vegan and vegetarian protein options even if you don't eat meat or fish. At the end of the day for muscle building (unless you want to become Mr. Universe) the key is proper calorie intake with proper macro intake and of course proper training with proper rest including sleep.
