We made our own kites that would sail into the clouds and out of sight using sticks and brown wrapping paper, with tails made out of multi-colored rags knotted and longer than we were tall.Bows were home made from tough, hickory and piano wire and arrows carved out of the left-overs from the branch used to cut the bow. Arrows were thin and sharp on the end with wire wrapped tightly to give them exquisite balance. The measure of a good bow and arrow was the ability to shoot the arrow straight into the sky and watch it go out of sight. We practiced on rodents in the barn from high perches, on narrow ledges and nailed a fair number. After, we leaped into the hay when it was high enough, otherwise a fall would have resulted in dire consequences.We swam naked as Jay’s, boys and girls together in gigantic pools of water made by the huge coal companies who strip mined the countryside then abandoned them for more profitable diggings.
