Contralto roles in musical theatre?

i'm a mezzo/alto belter with a pretty solid range of E below middle C to the D above the stave, and there's tons of roles for altos, even though you're at an advantage if you dance or are a comic character actress, as those seem to be the main "types" Altos also tend to play the mothers or supporting roles, even though there are several good main parts for alots in musical theatre
Rosie - Mamma Mia - Take a chance on me
Sally or anyone really - Cabaret - the title song, or Mein Herr
Mamma Rose - Gypsy - small world, some people
Baker's Wife - Into the woods - moments in the woods!
Velma Kelly/ Mamma Morton - Chicago - both of their solos
Madame Morrible - Wicked (FYI Elphie's usually a mezzo it's really hard to belt that high for an alto!) -sshe doesn't have a solo song but has lots of solo bits in songs
Mrs Pearce - My Fair Lady - only sings a bit in ICHDAN
Reno - Anything Goes - the title song! :D
Anita - West Side Story (she goes upto a top line F i think...)
loads of Sondheim roles including the woman who sings Ladies who lunch in Company...
Sheila/Diana/Bebe - A Chorus Line - S/B: At the ballet Diana: Nothing (Uptempo), What i did for love (Ballad, but transpose it down a bit)
Mrs Lovett - Sweeney Todd - worst pies in london, by the sea
Charity - Sweet Charity - you should see yourself, if they could see me now
Adelaide - Guys and Dolls - adelaide's lament (i did this more my MT Grade 5 and it was FAB! :D )

Basically, sopranos tend to get the "romantic" lead as a high voice is associated with innocence and loveliness and all that :S however, there are some AMAZING alto roles in musical theatre, that are loads more satisfying to play as they are so challeging to get in the minds of! :D

What are some musical theatre songs suited for beginner singers?

All musical theater songs are pretty easy. As far as vocal range and how hard they are to memorize they aren't hard at all. Popular songs are not tough with vocal range at least. If you want an OLD musical theater song they get tougher. I never did chorus (up until 8th grade) and in 7th I auditioned for a part in the school musical with Mr. Cellophane and got a role. I never sang or read music before. I find musicals catchy and fun so maybe its just me but I dont think you should have trouble singing one.

What should I sing for my Cats (the musical) audition?

I am a mezzo soprano. I mostly use my mix.
I don't have a specific character I want to be, really. I am probably best suited for like Jennyanydots because I tap dance.
I love the song Macavity. And basically every song any girl sings in the show so I don't have a specific role in mind because I love them all.

I know some cats dance more than others. I would probably rather be a cat that dances less just because but i can dance it alright. minus the tap. i love that. i could do that forever.

so i have no idea what to sing basically.
other andrew lloyd webber songs are just so different from this show i think .i dont know

i want something spunky i guess. and I can also prepare a ballad. but i have nothing specifc.

**cannot audition with a song from the show

helppp

A musical theatre song about fame?

Broadway Baby - Follies
Come One, Come All - Marguerite
Everything's Coming Up Roses - Gypsy
Fame - Fame
I Can't Do It Alone - Chicago
I'm the Greatest Star - Funny Girl
Let the World Turn - Marguerite
Life Upon the Wicked Stage - Show Boat
Prima Donna - Phantom of the Opera
Roxie - Chicago
Spanish Rose - Bye Bye Birdie
Show Off - Drowsy Chaperone
There's No Business Like Show Business - Annie Get Your Gun
Think of Meryl Streep - Fame
This Place is Mine - AMS Phantom
Wall Street - Dames at Sea
Whatever Happened to My Part? - Spamalot
With One Look - Sunset Boulevard

For your entertainment, "Musetta's Waltz" from Puccini's "La Boheme" also fits your criteria. Also some stuff from "Tosca"...it is after all, an opera about an opera singer.

Which musical instrument would you advise me to learn and teach my children in the future?

Piano.A digital piano (even just a midi-controller keyboard, connected to a computer) is by far the most versatile instrument to give a more-or-less rounded experience of music that will be useful and satisfying in the most contexts. An actual acoustic piano is a luxury, and completely unnecessary. And it is extremely limited compared to a digital version.I strongly recommend you consider the piano a part of your existing computer setup, so whenever you or your kids are playing it, it is automatically connected to interesting software. There are so many interesting directions they can take things. If you already have a computer and some speakers, adding a decent keyboard can cost as little as $150, and you’re good to go. Which is better suited for the wild, a domestic cat or a domestic dog?

The answer, as always is: It depends. In this case it depends on the specific animal. In general though, the cat is the safer bet.The reason is that the basic physical features of cats have remained unchanged despite breeding. This is a European Wildcat. Can you tell the difference between that and a regular cat? (No, they’re too similar.)Cats are ambush predators and they have retained those abilities throughout time. Domestic cats often hunt and kill prey, even when they don’t need to. Feral cats can survive in a multitude of environments. They evade predation by hiding.A lot would die, but many more would survive. So you have an animal that is physically capable of doing the things nature intended it to do. Some cats, such as Himlaya’s are toast due to breeding of course.Likewise, cats that have otdher health problems due to breeding won’t survive long. But otherwise the vast majority of cats will do just fine. Their prey is everywhere, they breed quickly and they are small, which is a survival advantage.Dogs are much different in this respect as this chart shows:Many of these breeds are unsuited for life without humans. Dogs need to cover a lot of ground to survive. Feral dogs tend to rely on human environments. They evade predation mostly through packs and by running. Dogs can and do hide, but not as effectively as cats. Many breeds are too small to effectively hunt and too slow to evade predators.Ask yourself, can this dog breed face off against a coyote? This is as good a survivability test as any.

Which musical instrument produces the saddest sound?

There’s a few answers talking about the Erhu, which I’m glad to see, as well as a few about the Viola.I know I’m probably very biased, but I believe the timbre of the Zhonghu (中胡) is one of the most sombre and emotional sounding instruments ever played. The Zhonghu is the Viola Counterpart of the Erhu in the modern Chinese Orchestra, tuned to G-D.From my experience, most Huqin players in an Orchestra choose to play the Erhu or the Gaohu, as they tend to get the more exciting melodies, solos and essentially lots of limelight, and for the most part, they can produce some of the most amazing performances that you’ll ever hear. The Zhonghu, on the other hand, is usually given accompaniment and secondary melodies. However, in the instances that it rises above being just accompaniment, I believe the Zhonghu is more than qualified to be called one of the most soulful instruments to exist today. If you have a minute to spare, do listen to this rendition of The Theme from Schindler’s List:
