How can I connect a USB dongle to my Android phone without rooting it?

Many people might have these 3G internet dongles lying around. which they use with their PCs and Macs. For people in many countries, the 3G speed might be faster than that of their home broadband internet connection.People who have tablets without 3G support might find the need to use these dongles with their device to get something downloaded quickly when the broadband is down. This can be done using an Android app called PPP Widget. As the name suggests, it is a widget, not an app.It is available in the Play Store and it is free. Download it to your device from here. You will need to be rooted and you must have a USB OTG cable. Depending on the type of USB port on your device you will have to get a Mini-USB or Micro-USB OTG cable. These cables can be easily purchased from Amazon, eBay or any other local store for around 2$ to 3$. Here are a few links- Amazon, eBay.Your device must also support the USB host feature. Most devices do come with this support. You can check with Google whether your device has support for USB host. If you are running a custom ROM with a kernel modified by the dev, you will most likely have support for it.Install PPP Widget from the Google Play Store from herePlace the widget on your home screen. Connect the dongle via the USB OTG cable. You will get a popup asking you if you want PPP Widget to open up whenever this device is connected.Tick the Use by default for this USB device option and hit OK.You might get this popup many times. Do the same step given above all the times. Once the status changes to Disconneted, hit the connect button. You will get a screen like this. Choose the first option- – Access Point Name.Refer to this link and lookup the APN for your carrier. Enter the Dialling string based on your carrier. CDMA – #777 , GSM – *99***1#.Once you are done, go back to the homescreen and hit the Connect ButtonThere you go. Now you have the internet from your 3G dongle on your Andorid device. Check the WiFi network name in the Notifications and it should be PPPWidgetThere you go, you have your 3G dongle working on your Android device. Check the video below for a tutorial.I hope it helps…

After installing CyanogenMod 14.1, I can only use the internet through WiFi, but I am unable to use my mobile data. What could the problem be?

Your question lacks details.Firstly, submit your model number, device name and all other details.Secondly you can always submit a logcat to Cyanogen developer community. The reason behind your issue maybe missing radio drivers for your device.Or maybe you just messed up something while installation. Well you can always revert back to your Stock ROM or just send a request in the appropriate XDA thread about your device.I can provide you suitable links if you tell me your exact device model number.Hope it helps.

No official word on it, so chances seems lesser.Check the xda developers website for any compatible rom and flash it. Cheers!

Can any self-taught programmers share how you learned programming?

I don’t have a Computer Science degree. I learnt programming myself by doing several courses and using various resources. I’ll tell you how I learnt programming. To begin with, I did a fundamental programming course in my college in which we were taught C. After this, I studied Data Structures (DS) and Algorithms. DS and Algo is important to develop that “coder aptitude”. Trust me, after doing this course, the way you approach a problem improves a lot. After this, I solved around 100 questions on Sphere Online Judge (SPOJ), which helped me get comfortable with programming.Once I was comfortable with coding, I did several web development and android development projects. This helped me to get some strong points in my resume. After this, I did several courses like Discrete Mathematics, Machine Learning, Cryptology, Databases, Operating Systems. I took some of these courses in my college and some online. Doing diverse courses helped me in exploring Computer Science more.Doing all this helped me get a good job right after college :)Hope you found this answer helpful!
