How to dye my hair silvery blue?

hi there. my natural hair is dark brown but I bleached it to an orangy kinda ugly color and I really want to dye it dark silvery blue like in the links below. I have heard things about the wella color charm in 050 cooling violet but how would I go about doing that? do I just mix it with developer and apply it to my orange hair or should I use toner first? im very confused please explain the process. thanks.

Will shampoo with blue dye make my blue hair more blue, or does it just slow down the fading? My hair is an ashy shade of blue.

yes it will definitely slow down fading.

My hair is currently a natural shade of blond. Can I dye it blue without further lightening it?

You can probably get away with a darker shade of blue if you don’t mind it fading to green. If you don’t want green you’ll have to bleach it first. Being a natural blonde, you won’t have to bleach it very far but just enough to remove some of the yellow tones. When I still worked in a salon, if the client didn’t want green I made sure to get their hair as close to white as possible without too much damage. This fades into a cotton candy pastel. The same goes for pink, which tends to fade orange over blonde hair. This is especially important with purple, as purple and yellow are opposite colors otherwise the color fades to a muddy gray. The damage to the hair from bleach also helps it soak up the color for better saturation. As most semi permanent bright shades are very conditioning, they are designed to help repair the hair as they’re usually applied after bleaching.Be aware that if you put blue over naturally blonde hair it may be difficult to remove completely without dyeing your hair again lighter to lift the rest of the color out. It will definitely work though with a darker blue.

Manic Panic Blue Hair Dye?

Manic Panic Works very well on one very specific type of hair... for everyone else it sucks! It happens to be my hair type, which is fine and straight. I've had mine blue for many years, and manic panic is my favorite even though everyone else hates it, but it works for me. If you have a different hair type I highly recomend you use Special FX or punky colors instead, they generally stay much longer in the majority of hair types.

By far the best manic panic blue to use would be after-midnight blue. It's very very dark, it looks almost purple in the jar but the color is very vibrant blue after you wash it out and when it fades it becomes just a normal blue (it kind of fades to what fresh "shocking blue" dye would look like,) then torquoisish and eventually green). Shocking blue is the next darkest after that, which is also bright but it fades right into turquoise/green.

After you've done it once and it fades, there is still a nice turquoise base for you to recolor, and the more recolors you've gone through The brighter and longer lasting your outcomes will be. The lower parts of my hair are pretty much permanantly blue stained, so my blues come out amazingly vibrant!

As a general rule, the darkest blue you can find will be the one that takes the longest to fade. Dark blues turn into blue, then turquoise, whereas lighter blues just go into torquoise and green right away.

There are additional tricks I've learned to keep your color longer. One is to wash it with white vinager after you're done. Another is to add some of the dye to your shampoo, so when you wash you're replenishing lost color. Also, apply to dry hair and then blow dry until the dye is almost hardened before washing it out.

I'm sure you already know you need to bleach first, but I'm just gonna mention it just in case. Good luck!

Will my blue hair fade back to blonde?

It will fade, but it's doubtful that the permanent colour will compeletly fade back to blonde.

As a natural blonde, I went red exactly once. It turned pink/orange as it faded and as I tried to correct it.

Your roots will grow out to your originial colour and you can continue to bleach it to lighten it.

How do I dye my hair blue if I have brassy color tones?

You need to have your hair lightened (with bleach) to a higher level, as close to platinum/white as you can get it. As of right now, you could put blue dye over the brassy color you have, but it'll likely end up a muddy greenish color. Blue can be difficult to get right yourself because you need your hair to be extremely light for it to actually end up looking blue. If your hair has lightened to an orangeish blonde, it's likely around a level 7 - 8. For blue to actually look blue, you need your hair to be a level 10+. Getting your hair that light can be extremely damaging, and I would NEVER recommend doing it yourself, period. Even when you get it done professionally by a master stylist, your hair will be damaged if you take it that light, but at least we know how to do it with the least amount of damage possible, and we can use professional grade products and deep conditioners to help prevent as much damage as possible, and make the damage less noticeable and more manageable. I have seen people literally melt their hair off trying to get their hair to platinum at home. Please don't try it. If you put a blue toner over orange-blonde hair, it will neutralize the orange and give you a nice blonde. If you put a bright blue color over orange-blonde hair, it'll likely end up muddy and strange since the orange will be directly acting against the blue, and it could end up a muddy, swampy green if the hair has yellow tones as well. What you need to be careful of is the yellow tones that come out when you lighten hair past the orange stage. At a level 9 your hair will be yellow (more like the outside of a banana...not that intense, but you get the picture), and at a level 10, your hair will be more the yellow of the inside of a banana. Obviously, yellow+blue=green, so you need to get your hair past that yellow stage and remove as much pigment as possible from the hair before applying the blue. I've seen a lot of people lighten their hair to a level 9 or so, and then just put blue over it thinking that the blue will cover it all up....Nope, they just end up with green...and not a pretty "I meant to do that" green, a bad green.

If I dye my hair blue, can I dye it back or will I have to cut it off?

Technically, there are ways you can dye it back.Blue dye will fade eventually; depending on the shade, it will probably fade to greenish or light blue, but if you are really lucky (like I was ONCE,) it might fade to platinum. If it gets light enough, like almost blonde again, you can dye over it, maybe with a warmer blonde to neutralize the green.Alternately, there are color removers that can get the color out. I cannot personally recommend one, because I usually just reach for the bleach. (I heard the muffled screams from the peanut gallery: it’s fine. My hair is not, in fact, fried.) You can remove the color and then dye it back to natural.Hang on…I missed a step. Were you planning on bleaching it? Most cases vary, but usually blue dye over natural dark to medium blonde hair turns very turquoise. That might not be the blue you wanted, but if you DON’T bleach your hair there is a better chance of the color fading out completely. It’s a porosity thing…bleached hair is more porous and hangs onto color longer, while natural virgin hair lets it go more quickly.I HATE giving the “go see a stylist” answer, but…it might be worth asking one for this. Even just a consultation might give you a better idea .However, if you’re like me, you can always “just kinda go for it,” and trust that the rest will work out later. ;) Good luck!

How should I dye my hair blue (I don't want to completely dye it)?

Well, if you do not want to completely commit to having blue hair, you can buy a midnight black blue shade where your hair appears black until you take a closer look at it and realize that it is indeed a dark blue. If you would like to have the blue stand out more, ( this is if you do not already have blond hair), you can bleach parts of your hair before applying the dye. You can bleach streaks, the tips, or create an ombre effect by gradually bleaching your hair lighter and lighter as you get closer to the tips. I’ve tried the Ion black blue shade before and it worked great. I know other hair dye brands have midnight blue, like Splat, but I don’t really know how they work because I have never tried them.I hope this answer helped and I hope your hair turns out great.

If you dye your hair blue, what is the best color to dye it afterward?

I had a friend who dyed her hair blue over the summer. When it was time to go back to school (as unnatural colors weren't allowed), she first tried to dye her hair regular brown. Well that backfired, as her hair turned a gross brownish greenish color. After that she had to go to a salon that dyed her hair bright red, and then brown on top of that (they used red because blue hair dye fades to a greenish color) . I would recommend using a semi permanent dye, which lasts a couple months, and then using a color remover and or color removing shampoo, and then dying your hair a color with red underneath, depending on what you want your hair to look like afterwards. If you prefer a darker color, then you can dye it black with a blue undertone and it would look decently natural. I would suggest the red color first though, as I've actually seen it work. Good luck!
