Young children do not know how to verbally express their feelings. Often they draw in an effort to express them. She could have merely seen a horror movie involving vampires that disturbed her — or it could be something deep and pervasive.You do not say why your niece is living with you. Was she removed from her parents because of abuse? If so, she may be trying to express her emotions from the abuse. Because of my own past mental issues, I believe that drawing a human eye being cut by knives may possibly (note I said possibly) be her having seen something that disturbs her that she wants to cut out of her memory. I suggest an adult sit down with her while she draws her pictures and ask her to discuss what she is drawing. Ask questions about her drawings but do not lead her. Do you like to look at your pictures? That's not a crazy question. In art school drawing class, we spent hours drawing the human figure but I found my drawings dull. OK, I was just learning but it wasn't until I changed my attitude about drawing and started drawing what I felt as much as what I saw that I could enjoy looking at my own work. If you like your own drawings, chances are someone else will as well. But don't expect everyone to like them. Art is very subjective and taste is both acquired (we tend to like what we know more about) and instinctive (there are certain inherited aspects to how the human eye and mind perceive beauty; for example, most people will prefer symmetrical features in a human face over asymmetry). It's important to keep working, keep drawing, and keep learning, regardless of how others look at your work.
