“Martha”. By Tom Waits.I was in college one night alone in my dorm room and maybe a little sad. I heard Bette Middle on the radio, singing a song called “Micheal”. I never heard it before and I never heard it again. But I never forgot it. The lyrics were different than anything I had heard before. A one sided telephone call. I was close to tears.Looking backward at your life and remembering the one love you lost but should never have lost. I was young but I knew I'd be living this song’ s tune one day. Maybe a few times over. It was most certainly going to happen. The ingredients of my nature and nurture did not put me in the category of one that could go the distance in life with “one” person. It was just one if those icky feelings. A knowing dread.Years later, sometime before my divorce, I won some points for something online and got to choose from a list of prizes. I picked a Tom Waits CD. I loved him but had not yet bought anything by him.The CD came in the mail. There it was. Martha. The song Bette sang, using Michael instead of Martha that stayed with me. I could not believe it. 20 years later. And now here it is 40 years later. Like the song lyric’s literal time span.Find this song and Listen to it right now! It takes just one listen.
