After being away from your home country for an extended period, what are some of the things you do as soon as you get back?
When I was 19 years old, I moved to New York from Istanbul to continue my education. I was pretty broke at first and spent most of my time with studying and working, later when I could take a trip to somewhere, I chose somewhere in America to explore more, so I could only visit Turkey once in the next four and a half years. My mother, sister and best friend came to visit couple times a year. They would often send pictures from Istanbul, which store was closed, new stores that opened, some billboards...they tried to kept me up to date on everything. When I got back, the first thing I did at the airport was going into the first store to buy anything. I just wanted to speak Turkish. (I did speak in Turkish in New York, but with the people I know. I wanted to speak with a stranger at a store.) Before I went to sleep, I asked my mother to go to the Bosphorus for breakfast, take a tour, watch the fishermen, throw simits to the seagulls. That's what I've missed the most. The next day I got together with my friends who couldn't make it to New York to visit me. They knew exactly where we were going to meet before I told them anything; the store that made the best kazandibi in the world. I've been talking to my friends about how I crave that store's kazandibi annoyingly too much.
