What is the difference between an icon and a symbol?

An icon is a representation of a thing or group of things that displays visual similarities to what it represents. For example, the picture of a piece of paper that Windows uses for text documents.A symbol is signifies a thing or group of things due to common association rather than visual similarity. For example, the £ sign for pounds sterling.

What symbol or meaning does a Virgin Mary statue weeping present? Are we sinning too much?

I live in Windsor and visited the statue at 1am on November 4th. I did see some "glistening" under the nose, and on the mouth and chin, but nothing from her eyes. I went back during the day on November 4th and saw no change in her expression but did notice some brownish drops at the end of her fingertips.

I am a woman of faith, and do believe in miracles, but in my opinion, THIS SPECIFIC CASE is just condensation. Again, just MY opinion.

Anyway, I took video and pictures which you can see on youtube. Search "'weeping' mary statue windsor ontario canada" or just follow the link below if you're interested in seeing for yourself. Camera quality is not that great, but it's at night and light is showing the glistening effect on her face.

What are the three symbols in Native Son? What is the symbolic meaning for each?

Blindness – Mrs. Dalton was blind. Even if she was trying to help black people by hiring them or sending them to school, she did not see the whole big picture. Although, she may have seen more than those with sight. Ironically, however, Mrs. Dalton saw those she hired as needing an education. Blindness may also represent racism in the United States’ society. For example, Mrs. Dalton was incapable of seeing Bigger in Mary’s room; this caused Bigger to panic and turn to violence. Additionally, the inability of whites to see blacks as people caused them – and Bigger – to live in fear and hate. Bigger also makes note of people around him being blind, blind to the big picture, blind to life. Continuing, Bigger’s blindness prevents him from seeing what opportunities he actually has, thus preventing him from advancing and jumping on opportunities.

White Snow – a snowstorm blocked Bigger from fleeing Chicago the night reporters found Mary Dalton’s bones. White snow covered everything, symbolizing how futile it is for Bigger to try and defeat the white race. The snowstorm is just like the white majority in government and society, covering and controlling everything. The forces Bigger is trying to fight throughout the novel are vastly large and everywhere, like the snow. Additionally, the Dalton’s pure white cat creeps Bigger; it reminds him of the white majority. The cat tends to be everywhere, watching Bigger, just like the vast white race would like to do with all blacks.

Cross – the preacher gave Bigger a cross on a chain when he was in jail. That cross was meant to protect Bigger. However, when Bigger is lead through a mob, he sees a cross burning in flames. This makes Bigger feel as if the cross around his neck is also burning. Additionally, Bigger feels as if traditional religion had abandoned him.

What images and symbols are associated with Mother Mary, Blessed Virgins, Israel, the Church, Shekhinah, Lady Sophia (wisdom), Eve or other female "entities" in Judeo-Christo-Islamic religions, traditions, scriptures, heresies, myths, songs, etc.?

It is well recorded that the majority of people in Europe prior to 1870, not so long ago were illiterate,so in the medieval times visual mediums of communication were well used,eg picture and icons,a good picture is worth a thousand words, unquote

Islam: If the Virgin Mary appears wearing a veil on all her pictures, why should we sign on a Hijab Ban Law?

I was once a muslim and practicing it. Thus i wore hijab because there really is a command in Quran about it. Surah An-Nur ayah 31. I am not sure how come the other say there is nothing about head covering in quran because the one that i (all or most muslims) learnt and read in the quran does say about covering the head and chest. So you see, for people who believe in that religion, wearing the headcover or hijab is a must and a lot of them is freely wearing it because they feel happy obeying their lord command or maybe they feel safe on it.Some people wearing magic pendant on their neck because they believe the pendant could give them protection or something. Why must one banned something harmless and compromise one belief.Maybe for us who dont believe such command is absurd, but for those believer the wearing those thing is meaningful. Using the excuse of Mary wearing veil against hijab-ban law is quite lame really. And somehow those must come from the muslims themselves. Well whatever. Who cares if Mary wore veil or not. If the banning of hijab is really to make one country very much secular, the same banned things should be applied to the other religions too. Though i must say banning these kind of thing is foolish. How absurd and ridiculous we believe religions are, theres a lot of people believe the religions are real and meaningful. Why cant we just live happily and respect the differences in others.Hence, i against the ban of hijab or anything that people want to wear lr not to.Who are you to tell me what to wear or not? My grandma? Duh.
