The Viceroy at that time Lord Wavell. In the beginning on 1947, when the news of India being partitioned on communal lines spread, a number of communal riots started in many parts of the country. This led to the removal of Lord Wavell, and Clement Attlee, the PM of UK decided to make Lord Mountbatten the Viceroy. Even as India got the new Viceroy, the condition didn't improve, and the Britishers became very anxious to leave the country in the hands of its people because the situation was getting out of their hands, given the conflict between the Muslim League and the Congress. In July 1947, the British Parliament passed the Indian Independence Act, 1947 and it got the Royal assent. August 15th - Lord Mountbatten, the Viceroy at that time, thought this date as lucky for himself. It was the same day in 1945(15th August), that the Japanese forces surrendered before him in the World War II. Midnight- It was more of an astrological reason why Midnight was chosen. It is said that Pt Jawaharlal Nehru, the first PM of India, believed that for any good thing "Friday" shouldn't be chosen.
