What To Do With My Photography

How do I sell my photography?

My start in selling photography was not exactly selling them per se, but instead being hired by a small business. The small business will give you some money and exposure, to help you build yourself up.When I could afford a camera from the money I made from photography, I began selling them at auctions, the first one being for cousin’s Cystic Fibrosis road race fundraiser. A mutual cousin of ours has Cystic Fibrosis, so I donated two images, and they sold for about 50% more than I spent on them, effectively doubling my donating, getting me exposure, and allowing me to see my photos printed, albeit briefly.I then donated after Hurricane Matthew to an online auction for recovery efforts. It hit hard near where my cousin went to school, and she worked on facilitating the auction. I sold two photos again, this time for $100 and $120, which was much more than 4 times what I paid for it.I also paid for the prints beforehand and had them at home for a long time, and they were absolutely gorgeous. These were the first I had done from a professional company. Most recently, I sold two photos for a charity auction for Boy Scouts.During all of these, I have gotten people interested in my photography, and as a result I have been able to garner interest in prints of mine.I haven’t sold any for my own profit, yet, but I am planning to by the end of April when my new site goes live.

What do you think of my photography?

What do you most like about photography?

Going on adventures.I get excited to step outside, somewhere unfamiliar and run into all the beautiful things everywhere. I love going out with my non-photographer friends and taking fun pictures. This is a picture of my best friend and his sister. We found an abandoned building one day and decided to go explore. There are many moments like that when you go exploring with the purpose to do fun and interesting things to photograph. It’s not just my favorite part of photography but my favorite thing in general.

What do you do in photography class?

It depends on the type of class. Some are all digital, some are all film and some are hybrid classes that do both. I teach photography at a community college, and for my introductory students, we start out learning the basics. The first few weeks of the semester is spent on the types of cameras, history of photography, how the camera works, types of photography, etc. Then we get into aperture, shutter speed, ISO, lenses and how it all works together to get the kind of pictures you want.

I give one photo assignment per week. I assign these on Mondays and they are due the following Monday. The introductory class is all digital for the assignments, but we do cover the basics of how film works and differences between film and digital. But we have a print photography class that can be taken when the intro class is completed. We use Scott Kelby's Digital Photography Book three volume set for our classes and Volume 1 is for the intro class, 2 for intermediate and 3 for advanced. Volume 1 is a very common photography textbook but in high school you might not even be given a textbook for the class.

If you want to know the specifics of your class, email the teacher and ask. High school photography classes are all over the map - some are just a vehicle for the yearbook to get pictures and some are serious about teaching the fundamentals of photography.

What can I do with my hobby art photography?

Create a portfolio, visit coffee shops, and ask about hanging prints. Generally you want to create a seasonal set for the next-to-come season and try and shop that, since businesses like to echo the current season. You can also sell prints online. The hard part is getting your website marketed to a likely client. There is a lot of competition out there. Personally, I use SmugMug for any event photography needs, which has been working out fairly well.Look at entry-level stock photography agencies as well, if you want to go that way. But that isn't really for art photography; that's a different style. What are some good sites to sell my photos? Might also have some answers for you.

Why do "orbs" appear in my photographs?

the dark setting usually has a long shutter exposure. meaning that the "click" is longer than usual. this allows more light to be exposed to the film or digital sensor. this makes a dragged light effect i.e. traffic shots. (kinda like this, http://blog.ditchme.de/img/05nov_wait_2.jpg).

That effect mixed with a flash can produce orbs. orbs can pop up in rain, snow, dusty areas. Dust in the camera, lens, or even the digital sensor. you can go to your local photo retailer to help you or contact the manufacturer.
