What Type Of Drums Are Used In The Paul Simon Song Graceland

Who are the African back up singers for Paul Simon on the Graceland album?

the group is called Black Mambazo, and the woman is Lady Smith(South Africans) i have the album and bought it there so dont know where else.

What is this song? African-esque drumming and Paul Simon sounding...?

Okay, so my parents are driving me crazy asking about some song they heard on the radio on their way home from visiting me in the city over this past Christmas. My friend has also heard this song, but doesn't know what it is, but says it's been getting a lot of air play in the last several weeks/months. Problem is, I don't listen to anything but rock on the radio, so I have no clue what the song is. They say it's got a lot of drumming in it that sounds tribal and/or African, and the singer sounds Paul Simon-esque. Does anyone know what this could be? My parents freakin' love it, but are useless when it comes to remembering lyrics and other helpful things to help me identify the song. LoL!

Thanks!

What are some songs with an african type feel/beat?

Not exactly African or Reggaeish, but something with like heavy drum and shakers or a jungle type feel. For example:
In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel
Send Me on My way by Rusted Roots
Bronte by Gotye
Something like these. Worldy sounding and natural.

Music Recommendations: What are some bands that sound similar to Vampire Weekend?

I love Vampire Weekend and have looked for bands that are similar to them for a long time. That being said, there aren't many! Some bands fit the "quirky" part, while others fit the instrumental sound of Vampire Weekend. But none combine those elements in the same way. I will recommend a few though. (Oddly, the most similar might be Paul Simon from the 1980s and his Afro-pop album Graceland.)Paul Simon - "Gumboots"Crystal Fighters - "At Home"The Drums - "Let's Go Surfing"Bishop Allen - "Oklahoma"The xx - "Islands"Hope those help! Make a playlist of them combined and you get a Vampire Weekend feeling...

What are some progressive rock songs with tribal drum beats in them?

Just replied in a different thread. Old Pink Floyd albums have a bunch of Tom-driven, tribal sounding grooves. Also, check out Tinariwen. They’re a prog rock band from Mali.

What are your 5 favorite songs off 'Peter Gabriel: The Melting Face Album (1980)' by Peter Gabriel?

FIRST -- The ideas of from this album (percussion with no resonance; and no symbol play, at all!!) -- was well ahead of its time, imo.

According to Public Image, this album heavily influence the Percussion on their best album, "Flowers of Romance"

Ironically, Phil Collins (who played on Peter Gabriel "3") loved the "Flowers of Romance" drum-engineering so much, that he changed his "style" -- and the result was his debut album from the same year !!

( I don't know -- I thought that "trivia" was interesting :)) lol

SECOND -- Paul Simon's 1986/87 "Graceland" ideas of using South African musicians, to create a "World Sound" -- is directly influenced by Peter Gabriel "3" (1980)

-- YET, Simon was the one who reaped all the attention, for bringing a "new sound" into Rock.

( the Winners write the History, eh ?? ;)

OKAY -- MY ANSWER --

1. Lead a Normal Life
2. No Self Control
3. Biko
4. Games Without Frontiers
5. And Through the Wire

P.S. -- The German Version is truly worth getting !! Different mix, as well as language.

He also did this album in another language, but I forget what it is; and have not heard it.

...and "Yes !! This album IS Amazing" :)

What do YOU want, or, require from a drummer in your music? If you were auditioning drummers, what would you listen for in a drummer backing you up?

One word- POCKET. I don’t care what genre you’re playing- rock, pop, jazz, funk, R&B, hip-hop- if the ensemble can play around a drummer’s timekeeping relatively freely and the time doesn’t falter, you got a good drummer. If the drummer doesn’t groove, it’s just not gonna feel natural. I would take a drummer that was an average soloist or technician with a tight pocket over the best technician with no groove. You gotta have heads bobbing, folks feeling the beat inherently. If your drummer doesn’t have that, you’re gonna trip over each other and it’ll get messy.Case in point- great example of a pocket drummer, Levon Helm. Not known for his drum solos (can’t say I’ve ever seen him take a solo) or for crazy technique, but he could friggin’ GROOVE.Having a drummer that can take solos and be a creative technician is always a plus, but to me, pocket is more important than anything. Usually a drummer with a killer pocket is also a great technician and soloist, but sometimes the groove is all you need. A smart drummer understands that and exploits it to the song’s benefit.
