What Type Of Turtles Are Kept In Cold Water

Can a turtle survive in cold water?

Can a turtle survive in cold water? Red-eared sliders not only can survive in cold water, they do so in the wild, every year. Throughout much of the area that red-eared turtles live, the lakes and ponds they live in get quite cold during the winter. The water temperature is often 40 F and the ponds occasionally freeze over.In fact, this is one reason they are listed as an invasive species in several states. For instance, in Oregon, red-ears have such a listing. This turtle isn’t native to the western US, but there are now breeding populations in many ponds in Oregon. Yearly air temperatures drop well below freezing in Oregon, in the winter, so most ponds freeze over every year. Yet, the population of wild red-eared turtles in Oregon goes merrily along. Our two female red-eared sliders (both females) are kept in a 55-gallon aquarium, 3/4 filled with water and with rocks at one end so they can get out of the water when they choose. The tank isn’t heated, but since it is in the house, the water is never as cold as it gets outdoors in the winter. They’ve thrived in this arrangement for 12 years. However, if we had a pond outdoors, there is little doubt that they would survive much colder water temperatures than ours experience. As long as the water doesn’t freeze solid and the turtles have access to mud and vegetation, they should be fine in cold water. They are more sensitive right after they hatch, but that usually happens in the spring, so in about six months, they become tough enough to withstand and flourish in cold water.

Do turtles like warm or cold water?

Hello!

Common snapping turtles are quite tolerant to cold, but they will like water at about 70-75 degrees. You should also have a basking area as they will sometimes bask. A good light is also necessary - full spectrum and heat.

Hope that helps and have fun with your new friend - and watch your fingers!

Can turtles be in warm or cold water?

I have a baby red eared slider and i don't really know if it has to be in cold or warm water i live in illinois so when its winter it gets really cold around here help!

How do you know if turtle is cold?

The turtle is probably sleeping. A cold turtle will be less active and show a loss of appetite before hibernating. I highly doubt that your turtle is that cold! You don't mention the species, but most turtles kept as pets like the water temperature to be 72-75 degrees.

Hope that helps!

Does your Turtles water feel cold, warm, or in between?

You really, really, really need to get a thermometer! You'll never be sure if the water is being kept at the right temperature unless you have a thermometer.

KEEP THIS IN MIND: a human's body temperature is about 98 degrees Fahrenheit. So if the water feels warm to you, then there's a chance that it is in the 90-degree range! If the water feels frigid cold, it could be in the 60 to 70 degree range (my axolotl's tank is at a consistent 65 degrees but when I stick my arm in there and pull it out, my arm is sooo frigid cold and numb!). If the water feels at room temperature-ish, then you could be in the 80 to 90 degree range.

I have a heater in my tropical fish tank, and the tank is usually at a good 78 degrees, but the water still feels cool to my hand and wrist. Don't let your own body temperature mess with your turtle's water! :)

How can I keep my turtle tank water warm without any heater?

You leave out some things. If it is indoors, you don't have to. You probably have Red Slider turtles and they will just hibernate on the bottom if it gets cold enough. Mine are outside in San Diego and do just fine in the cold season. They just come up from time to time and sun themselves on a rock. But other than that they just lay on the bottom and play dead. You should provide a warming light they can use when they decide they need to warm themselves but they are cold blooded animals.
