What Types Of Diamond Like Stuff Are There

Why are people obsessed with Diamonds?

They're worthless. Thousands of them are mined on a daily basis - just horded by the major diamond companies and released slowly. Try selling them back - you'll get a 1/4 of it's original price.

And they're sooo plain!

Why is a diamond an element?

Carbon is an Element. Diamond is a crystalline form of pure elemental carbon and can therefore can be classed as ‘Elemental’.Very similar to other forms of pure carbon such as graphite - a diamonds structure is made of tetrahedrally bonded carbon atoms in a covalent network lattice - each carbon atom is covalently bonded to four other carbon atoms - this a type of cubic structure and covalent bonds are super duper strong this is what makes the so scratch proof. The variations in diamond color comes from impurities of nitrogen (yellow/brown) or boron (blue) scattered amongst the crystal lattice but not part of the structure.Other colors (pink, red, etc) can also come from deformations in the crystal structure (called plastic deformation), color centers (spaces in the crystal structure) that absorb light from different wavelengths and irradiation of the carbon - giving the endless different hues of diamonds.

Can diamonds stop a bullet?

Fares D. Alahmar and Nate Fore have it right: there are two different properties you want to pay attention to when you're trying to build armour: hardness and toughness.Hardness is how resistant the material is to being bent or deformed.Toughness is how resistant it is to fracture.Generally speaking the more of one you have the less of the other you get. That's why glass doesn't bend, but snaps suddenly (high hardness, low toughness) and a metal like lead bends (low hardness, high toughness).Fast brittle fractures generally occur at lower energies than elastic/plastic failures, so for armour you ideally want something with a high toughness. You do want a reasonable hardness though because what you want the projectile to do is expend all it's kinetic energy deforming the armour plastically. Diamonds fail as an armour material on a number of grounds. At low energy impacts a diamond armour plate might well be able to deflect a projectile without any real damage, but it would be at risk of shattering if the projectile energy exceeded a critical point. Remember how I said that brittle failure generally occurs at lower energies than plastic failure? That means that a softer material with a higher toughness will be able to defeat kinetic projectiles with higher kinetic energy than a high hardness low toughness material will.If you look at the performance of real armour under attack you'll see:Notice how the impacts look like big smudges in the metal? That's where the armour is deforming under impact and absorbing the projectile's energy as it does so. Homogenous armour doesn't defeat a projectile by having it magically bounce off, it does so by forcing the projectile to push around more metal than it has the energy for. Even body armour works in a similar way, the way the aramid fibres are woven causes the bullet to lose all it's energy trying to tear them (they have very high strength in certain directions, and the weave is designed to maximise this).Of course the main reason that diamonds would suck as armour is that they're very expensive and difficult to build things out of. So sorry, no blingpanzers any time soon. If the cost of fabrication came down in the future it might make sense to include layers of artificial diamond in a composite armour sandwich, but who can say what the threat will be in the future?

What does it mean when your boyfriend buys you a diamond necklace and matching earrings?

We've been together 4 2 months now n just yesterday he got me a diamond necklace and matching earrings wth warranty and everything. Like that's got to cost alot. N hes not the type of person to usually do stuff like that. Im not complaning but It makes me think cuz we'v nvr told each other that we love one another. So confused. Is it just a present that he wanted to get for me or does it also hav a significant meaning 2 it?

Should I play Pokemon Diamond or Pokemon White 2?

I have both of them and was wondering which game I should play. I like the contests in Diamond, as well as the Underground stuff. Is there anything fun like that in White 2? Any help deciding would be greatly appreciated.

What are diamonds worth, or are they really worthless?

Diamonds are worthless in that they do not have an intrinsic value. However, due to a simple supply and demand relationship we value them highly due to a very scarce supply. Imagine if diamonds would have been as abundant as, let's say, almonds. Nobody would wear them. We value scarcity because that allows us to stand apart. The more we can distinguish ourself from the rest, the more we pay. That being said, actually diamonds have some practical utility in industrial sector (to cut stuff). But in that case they use artificial diamonds: they don't look as pretty, but possess the same characteristics (more or less).

Why is diamond a mineral even if it is carbon?

One of the most accepted definitions of a Mineral encompasses being a inorganic, non-biogenic, naturally-occuring solid; it's composition can be represented in a chemical formula and the atoms that make it have a specific arrangement in specific positions (which is called a Crystal structure). That definition takes no account whether or not the mineral is made of a single element or several.I would however disagree with Malcolm Sargeant, in that Coal is usually considered a sedimentary rock, and not a mineral. Its degree of crystalinity varies a lot from totally amorphous to fairily crystallized, and it usually consists of multiple small grains instead of a single piece, and it's origin is organic and biological.

Why are diamonds most commonly found in Africa?

That's a pretty heavy science project. The websites that explain the formation of diamonds tend to do so in language that leaves you not even realizing that it has been explained to you.

The key to this is the rock type "kimberlite". Kimberlite is a visitor from the upper mantle, where the pressures and temperatures are extreme enough to form diamonds. There are virtually no places on earth, though, where you see this rock type because there are virtually no places where rock from this deep can get to the surface. This is an ancient phenomenon from a time when the earth was much younger and hotter. Stuff from that deep does not get to the surface any more.

The diamonds that we find in kimberlite pipes are up to a couple of billion years old, hailing back to the "hot old days" when kimberlites were being formed more commonly. There are not many places on earth where two billion year old rocks can be found - only the oldest and most stable cratons. The diamond regions of southern africa are examples of such regions, and more recently similar regions have been found in ancient cratons in Australia and Canada. We're talking about really, really old rocks here - haling back to a time three times older than the oldest life on earth.

Took a while to find a site with info that is anything close to something that a 12 year old can use, but the link is below. Perhaps a kind geologist can expand upon or correct what I have written here. I did a degree in geology once, but that was three years of study 25 years ago, and I don't even pretend to be competent in the field any more.

Good luck!

Why do women/girls get so excited over diamond rings, like from Kay's or Jared's?

i personally think Kays and Jareds are very cheap/bad quality and mass produced.

i like a family-owned jewelry shop type place best.

i agree, blood diamonds are horrible. i would NOT buy from a place that sells them.

Tiffanys is stupid b/c they sell the same type and quality of diamonds as anywhere else for like 10x the price or more! you're just paying for the brand name and once the dang thing is on your finger, no one is going to know if you got it from Tiffany's or Zales etc.

I wouldn't get a sterling silver engagement or wedding ring b/c they don't hold up as well as gold. I would just go with white gold. cheaper than platinum but just as pretty and holds up very well. I've heard platinum is very delicate and you have to do much more maintenence with it.
