What Universities Are Good In Chemistry

Does San Jose State University has a good chemistry program??

I am planning to major in Chemistry or Biology( or pre-med in general) at San Jose State University. Do SJSU has a good chemistry program or biology program? I am planning to become a pharmacist. Will I have a higher acceptance rate to graduate school if I go to UC Davis instead? Has anyone here goes to SJSU and also doing pre-med and planning to transfer after 4 yrs? or anyone in the same situation? Can you give me some advices. I'm deciding between UC Davis and San Jose State. Thanks

Is Mississippi State University a good university?

MSU is a small, but rather good state university located in NE Mississippi (Starkville).. It is a land grand institute, which means it was funded by grants of land back in 1876. The school has a rich history of agricultural research, so it is a research driven institution, much more than many of the private universities of the USA.

They have a solid chemistry department, a fine business college, an outstanding veterinary medical school (especially large animal), a a great Ag College, and an equally strong Engineering College.

You didn't mention her SAT score, so it may or may not have been a factor in her entrance.

Her father's connection may have been a big factor in her success. While you may consider to be "weak", she may have skills that someone at MSU needs. Unfortunately, many students lack the needed skills required by many research projects. Her father (like many Ph.D's) would know this, contact his friends, asked what they needed, then had her include this with her application.

Sometimes it's not what you know, or who you know, but what you know to show.

If your friend wants an outstanding liberal arts education, she may be better off somewhere else. If your friend wants bright lights and big city, it's definitely not for her.

But if she wants to be in the forefront of many research fields, a chance to work with some of the best and brightest in technical fields, then she should consider herself fortunate.

Is chemical engineering good at SASTRA University?

Although you can't compare SASTRA with the premier institutes like IIT's,NIT's or regional colleges like A.C.Tech,IICT Bombay, SASTRA still ranks as one of the senior and advanced research institute in the field of Chemical Engineering. The research facilities over here makes it as one of the best colleges for a research enthusiast.Placements are also good overhere.Companies like Orchid Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals,Ranbaxy,Manali Petrochemicals etc.. are some of the companies who recruit Chemical engineers from SASTRA.Though, you cannot judge a college based on it’s placements in a field like Chemical Engineering, because most of the Power and Chemical Sector's in India demand your GATE scores for getting a job or intern over there. Here are some of the points which let me overthrow before you, which makes SASTRA a significant and a better college in the stream of Chemical EngineeringThe syllabus and education system over in SASTRA makes it as high ranking institute in this field,as the syllabus system satisfies the basic criteria's a Chemical engineer should be aware of.Most of lecturer's in Chemical department are Ph.D holder’s and research scholars and they would have produced atleast a count of 5+ research papers. This adds up as an another feather on cap for the University.SASTRA is always famous for it's research hub and other research facilities. Also other programs like ACRS(Accelerated Course Registration System)which shorten's the number of semesters you can study and SAP(Semester Abroad Program) which allows you to complete your last semester in abroad after satisfying certain criterias are some of significant one's which makes your college life an interactive and helpful platform if you aim to be researcher or a successful Chemical engineer. These are some of the factors which makes SASTRA distinct from other normal Universities.

Which universities are good for chemical engineers to pursue their PhD from the USA?

Fortunately, there is decently good list of universities in USA for PhD in chemical engineering. Universities like University of Minnesota, Purdue University, University of Michigan, Texas A&M University (and believe me lot more) are good in Chemical Engineering. This is a good website to go for:University RankingsBut decision to choose a University is not so objective and should be considered in a more subjective manner. Factors like research interest, faculty of choice, future career prospects, stipend (if it matters so much to you), cost of living, food, etc are usually good to be considered. A good way to know about these is to contact their International Relations Office or talk to college seniors who are there.Talking about the stipend, it is approximately 2000$ (ranges from 1600$ to 2200$) in which a grad student is supposed to arrange for housing, food, etc.In this stipend, I personally know a lot of people with variable savings. Savings depend on the place (cost of living), personal expenses. Like for example, if you stick yourself to cooking at home, you can actually save a lot. Grad students often buy a car which is additional expense. Often, people go for yearly trips which requires a good amount of money. So it totally depends on you how much you can save, but if I see people around me for savings, people normally save at least 500$ per month. :)

Do you have to be good at chemistry to be a doctor?

I'm pretty sure you have to be good at both. When you think about it, your whole body is chemistry. Drugs are chemicals, and how they interact with our bodies- that is all as chemical reactions.
I would get a tutor, and convince yourself that you love chemistry to really learn it well. You can also try to take the class again with a different teacher- sometimes different teachers make the world of difference.

Good chemistry books to read for Uni application?

Let me get this straight. You want us to supply the names of books that will look impressive on your personal statement, but which you have not read or used? Is that really what you are asking?

Why be a chemist or chemical engineer if you have little enough interest in the subject that you have to ask us to tell you what books to put on your application?

EDIT: Well, OK. But honestly, as a professor who has read a lot of applications for my chemistry department in the process of admissions, you don't need to cite books you WILL read to the person reading your personal statement.

As for what to read: The problem is that there aren't very many books about chemistry that aren't just textbooks that you can search for on Amazon. There many freshman chemistry textbooks and just wading into them on your own is difficult. Other books? Ever notice how there are more interesting biology and physics books in the Science section of a large commercial bookstore like Borders or Barnes & Noble? (I say this as a chemist who wishes it weren't so.)

Despite that, here are three books that may pique your interest and really tell you something about chemistry too:

(1) The Same and Not the Same - by Roald Hoffmann
(From one Amazon reviewer: "...I found myself thinking much of the time that a lot of the material in the book might be difficult to grasp in full depth for someone who hasn't had at least 1 or 2 college-level chemistry classes...It's probably a good book to read if you're a high school senior or college freshman who is on the fence about majoring in chemistry.")

(2) Uncle Tungsten: Memories of a Chemical Boyhood, by Oliver Sacks

(3) Napoleon's Buttons: How 17 Molecules Changed History, by Penny Le Couteur & Jay Burreson

What are the best universities to study chemical engineering?

It is a great mistake to use rankings for the myth of the best university. The question is which, universities would be best for you? As you do not specify the country, I suppose that you are American. Please be aware that Quora is international, and that chemical engineering is taught in many languages in many countries. Toulouse has some marvellous pilot plant, and expects the background you get from the French education system, which, incidentally, includes advanced mathematics. If you are so rich that money is not an issue, you can go where you want. If you have top grades (not just very good, but top) you can get in most places (but do not assume all - those in highest demand can afford to be choosy). However, if you are not so rich you might look at the costs involved. Some can be very expensive places to live. If you are not the top student, you might like to consider if you would like being bottom of the class in a tough school, or one of the top students in a slightly lower one in the pecking order. As a rough rule of thumb, those that take the highest grades and for which there is the highest competition expect the students to look after themselves and overcome any deficiencies of the teaching. Those that routinely take students with relatively low grades are more likely to have a more supportive teaching strategy.I would generally look for a course which is accredited by the appropriate body, so that you will be accepted as a graduate. If you are from the USA (and not thinking of the rest of the world) see what the AIChE lists. If you are from the USA and a bit more adventurous, why not see what Canada, the UK, Ireland and Australia have to offer? You might also like to look at what options might interest you, and make for a career. Would you be excited by particle technology, or biotechnology?

Good at Biology but bad at Chemistry?

If chemistry is a requirement for the biology degree, then you have to either pass chemistry or switch majors. Or switch schools, I guess, but that's a fairly common requirement.

Does Cal have any majors closely related to biology without the chemistry focus? (eg, environmental studies or human biology)

Unless you have a specific focus within biology that you know doesn't use any chemistry, you will probably need to know at least the basic concepts. Much of biology depends on chemistry:
Enzymes work by lowering the activation energy of a reaction, and sometimes by coupling a thermodynamically-unfavorable reaction to a highly favorable one. Neuron impulses are all about an electrochemical gradient directing the movement of ions. A lot of medical tests these days are based on DNA hybridization or sequencing.
I'm not saying you'll ever need to know what happens when you add HBr to benzene. But you may need to understand why fats have a higher oxidation potential than sugars.
