What Was The Theme Of The War Chest

What are recurring themes you have noticed from the wars throughout history?

Not a good idea of being a civilian when armies are nearby.Have you seen G.O.T. ? , Well it talks a lot about plundering , raping and other kindness typical of the armies all along history. In XXth century it becomes sometimes worse with racial cleansing, ideological cleansing , cultural cleansing.Do you really need any examples ?The Antiquity wasn’t less crual . Romans were among the best players …Around 3 millions Gauls sold in slavery after Julius Caesar conquest. Around 30% to 25% of the population. Male, female and children alike of course.Carthago burnt to the ground and salt even spreaded to the land avoid any further settlements. All population killed or enslaved , all population. What’ s “funny” about this is that if destroyed in 146 BC the same romans rebuilt the city at same place in 29 AD.Do you know that even nowadays it is very hard to find out Cartheginian artefacts at the place where Carthago was. There is many examples of Roman brutality…Middles ages heard about some one called Gengis Khan and pyramids of beheaded. No joke some cities in central asia had simply nearly dissapeared from history.Renaissance, Yes Leonardo and Michelle Angelo also the thirty years war in Germany and central Europe with the kindness of the various mercenaries like the Sack of Magdeburg.I stopped there the list of atrocities done by armies on civilians people.Just a point more , from beginning on XXth century to nowadays the ratio between military killed by war/civilian killed by war is growing and growing more on the civilian side.WW1 was nearly 60/40 on the military ( illness caused by bad living conditions costs a lot in some areas , also the Armenian genocide )WW2 nearly 60/40 on the civilian .VIETNAM around 70/30 on the civilians. 3 millions dead for Vietnam. Civilians killed mostly Vietnamese.Iraki freedom. well the numbers are very blurred but it seems that the ratio is around 75/25 on the civilians. The conflict itself from 250 k to 1 million. Mostly Irakians of course …It is now nearly safer being in the army than being a civil if a war occurs. Paradoxical isn’t it ?

In literature, is WAR a theme?

The reason I ask is because my teacher assigned us summer homework and listed it as a theme. The assignment tells us to keep a reader response log for 8+ passages from each work that address ONE of the themes of that novel (see above). Copy the section (1-2 sentences) from the work that relates to the theme along with the page number. Then, explain in 2-3 sentences of your own words how that passage relates to the theme. Bring these on the first day of class.

In the above, it only lists one theme for the book I chose (The Things They Carried): war. How am I suppose to relate the passage to the theme, when the book is about war? It doesn't seem like there's going to be needed much explanation. For example:

"On occasions the war was like a Ping-Pong ball. You could put a fancy spin on it, you could make it dance"
etc.

There seems to require no analysis as the passage IS war.

My MAIN QUESTION is how do I relate a passage to war, if it's describing war itself. Examples would be appreciated.

Please help.

Thanks in advance!

Help -- Whats the theme of this poem !?

Please can someone tell me whats the theme of this poem ? and explain why :)

is it ...struggle of life ?

Title: To you who would wage war against me

there are many lines you have not traced on my palms still
you think you know me , when i speak you nod knowingly as if
you've read my mind and are only politely acknowledging the confirmation of my spoken words

but you cannot possibly know what i've been contemplating these days
my head is full of blood but you show no fear and i do not trust my hands which feel to me like stones

you do not cower when i approach though i am like a runaway train
and i can hear you voice cool and steady while my brain screams profanities into the air around your ears , our past had given you no reason to be afraid but still i am surprised you cannot see
the danger burning brightly in my eyes
the fire i am struggling to control

as i sit stewing in the kitchen's false light with tears my daughter comes to me frightened by what she cannot see afraid tonight to sleep

i hold her in my arms singing soft words of comfort feeling her heart quickly beating against my chest knowing before i can think that i have forgotten us for our stupid little war

knowing in the incandescent light that anger will never move me as delicately as she has moved me this night

---

Thanks :)

How is “Small Pain in My Chest” an anti-war poem?

Well,The portrayal of a soldier’s death is shown in such a light that you can’t help but wonder whether it’s an anti war poem.A young soldier leaving his loving parents at home, enlists for war and the brownish-red stain on his shirt, due to a wound on his chest small yet lethal, suggests nothing but the casualty and grief of war.Brothers in arms fought together, everyone but the young man sits there undead, yet not so alive, wondering what path led him here. The poet describes not the agony but the soldier’s grief and disappointment, who has a small pain in his chest and a weak-faint smile asking for a sip of water. If this isn’t the bad side of war then what is?The afternoon sun that gets dimmer by the second signifies that the soldier is going to pass out, and die.The poet then talks about a big metaphorical wound in his heart, crying while pressing the dead body of a young man against him, who had a small wound that lead to his demise. If this isn’t anti-war poem then I don’t know what is.***

I've heard mostly that this is about a mother getting angry with her daughter and then reconciling in the end. But is that actually what it's about?
It kind of seems to me like she's angry with someone else and then finds comfort in her daughter.

Help?!

What is the name of the chest beat song in the movie Wolf of Wall Street?

It is from “The Hum” by Dimitri Vegas, Like Mike, and Ummet Ozcan.

Help with Poem. 'The sleeper in the valley' by Arthur Rimbaud?

It’s a green hollow where a river sings
Madly catching white tatters in the grass.
Where the sun on the proud mountain rings:
It’s a little valley, foaming like light in a glass.

A conscript, open-mouthed, his bare head
And bare neck bathed in the cool blue cress,
Sleeps: stretched out, under the sky, on grass,
Pale where the light rains down on his green bed.

Feet in the yellow flags, he sleeps. Smiling
As a sick child might smile, he’s dozing.
Nature, rock him warmly: he is cold.

The scents no longer make his nostrils twitch:
He sleeps in the sunlight, one hand on his chest,
Tranquil. In his right side, there are two red holes.

The poem "An Old Story" by Richard Hoffman?

Differences of Poetry
No two things are exactly alike. This applies for poetry as well. The two poems “When Black People Are” by A. B. Spellman; and “The ***** Speaks of Rivers” by Langston Hughes; are two completely different yet similar works: this is because not only are the theme of the poems different, but the structure and the point of view that the poems are written in, are also different: but they also have similar attributes.

The two poems that I be comparing and contrasting in this essay are “Disabled” and “Mental Cases”, both by Wilfred Owen. They are both poems that are about the after-effects of the horrors caused by the First World War. In “Disabled”, Owen puts across the thoughts of a young man who has lost his limbs and been confined to a wheelchair after suffering injuries in the war. “Mental Cases”, on the other hand, describes soldiers who had developed post-traumatic stress after the war. Owen used his own experiences to assist him with this poem, as he himself spent time in a military hospital.
