Aciclovir can be used to treat an existing cold sore, or it can be applied as soon as you feel the "tingle" that comes before a cold sore develops. BTW, the herpes simplex virus remains in your system even after the cold sore has gone, which is why cold sores will keep appearing from time to time. This seems to happen to me when I am under stress/not sleeping/not eating properly as my immune system is weaker during these periods.

I second the Abreva. And an ice pack on it for 10-15 minutes every couple of hours. Next time if you do that as soon as you feel that tingle you probably won't even end up with the blister that starts the sore.

Don't pop it or do anything like that to a cold sore,that will make it spread and get worse.There are several things on the market that will help heal up a cold sore, but the best thing I have ever tried is a prescription ointment called Denivare, It works really good,at the first sign of a cold sore,(the itching) you start putting this on,you may still get a slight cold sore, but it will be minimal and will not get as big or as sore. Another one is over the counter called Abrevia, They are both rather expensive, but work good. I will admit that I use to use household bleach when I was younger and that also worked but it really burned when I applied it,but I would not recommend that as it can burn your skin tissues. I have used the prescription Denivare at the first sign of an out break and rarely do I ever get a full blown sore. Good Luck .
