Whats Your Opinion On Juke Box Musicals

Good jukebox musical songs for...?

Hello! In my musical theatre class we need a song from multiple musical styles, including jukebox musicals. I've never really been a big fan of jukebox musicals so I don't know much about it. Additionally, I'm not really a powerhouse voice. I specialize more in mixing so not a legit belt or legit head voice. Mixing is my strong suit. I can easily chest to about an E or F4 (pretty low haha I'm not really a belter) but I can take my mix up to about a D#5. I'm having trouble finding a song. I was wondering if anyone know of some songs that may fit that description? Only one problem: they can't be from All Shook Up. :( I'm not sure why; probably because it's a popular one... Anyways, thanks!! Help is greatly appreciated!!

What is a "Jukebox Musical"?

A jukebox musical is a musical that is constructed out of pre-existing pop songs rather than songs that were written for the show in the theater. Sort of the quintessential example of this genre is Mamma Mia!, which launched the craze when it opened on Broadway in 2001, and there have since been many similar shows, varying greatly in quality. (I would argue, with precious few exceptions, from bad to putrid, but that’s me.)It’s probably best to not confuse jukebox musicals, which pair pop songs with new books (or scripts) to songwriter showcase shows, which use the songs of an artist or group to tell the story of that artist or group. A major example of this style of show is Jersey Boys, which relates the history of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons using the songs that they wrote and made famous (including “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Oh What a Night,” “Can’t Take My Eyes of You,” and more). In my opinion, the shows of this style tend to be of generally higher quality than “regular” jukebox musicals, but still aren’t on the level of traditional book musicals. In the best shows of that style, the book and the songs fit together perfectly because they were written to do so; in jukebox musicals, they basically don’t fit together at all (because they can’t), and in songwriter showcases they’re usually compromised by either a hagiographical feeling or a dull “and then I wrote, and then I wrote, and then I wrote…” structure.

What in your opinion makes someone a musical theatre nerd?

I’m no authority on this, but from my experience feel like there are different tiers to musical theatre nerd-dom:Tier 1: The most casual fan, someone who has maybe seen a Disney or jukebox musical, or even an Andrew Lloyd Webber show or Les Mis, and didn’t hate it, but certainly doesn’t sing along to all of the words. Possibly unironically rates Shrek the Musical in their top 3.Tier 2: Here we’re getting into the contemporary musicals like Hairspray, Wicked, Rent and Hamilton. Probably loves their Disney and Glee as well. For Tier 3 I’d possibly add Heathers, The Last 5 Years, Book of Mormon and Dear Evan Hansen for new stuff, as well as an appreciation for classics such as The Sound of Music and Fiddler on the Roof. At this stage, the nerd is probably participating in local shows, and maybe goes stagedooring after performances. The nerds at Tier 4 and beyond are out of my reach (I’d put myself at a safe 3.5) but I’d imagine there’s a detailed knowledge there of musical history, obscure Sondheim musicals and shows which haven’t had much commercial success.

What instruments are played in 'Popular' from the musical 'Wicked'?

I listened to it trying to hear what there was and this is what I got, can't really give you specifics of the orchestra, but the basic strings (violin, bass, viola, I'm pretty sure I heard harp), I heard triangle, some brass (horns), obviously piano, mostly being able to hear it best during the chorus. It really isn't too complicated, really basic instruments, but if you need more specifics, I suggest Google :)

I need names of Musicals ?

I'm putting together a show in my local town and we're doing a mash up of some great musicals. So far, I have Les Mis, Wicked, Wizard of Oz(maybe), Mamma Mia... Anymore? anything at all just not classical. There are sopranos but not opera singers. Thanks so much.

What are different types of musicals?

Jukebox - musical based off the work of existing artists (IE: Mamma Mia (ABBA), We Will Rock You (Queen), Movin' Out (Billy Joel) etc.)

Rock Musical/Opera - shows with a rock sound track (IE: Hair, RENT, Jesus Christ Superstar)

Musical Comedy - generic term for all musicals, since they're all light hearted

Horror - I wouldn't really call this a genre, but you have shows like Little Shop of Horrors and Phantom of the Opera that are about the thrill and horror of the story.

Classic - Older 1940s/50s style musicals that are what defined the genre originally. (IE: Sound of Music, Oklahoma!, West Side Story)

There's also things related to musicals like reviews, cabaret, and follies.

What is your favorite original musical and why?

I’ve dug this list out the comments on another answer. This is a list of every musical I was able to think of that was not based on a previous property written by someone else. I’ve left out shows based on myths and folk tales.
