When Can I Report To The Police

What do you do when someone files a false police report on you?

First, just because someone contacts the police, doesn’t mean a report will be filed. If a report is made, it also doesn’t mean that an arrest will follow. If when talking to the reporting party it is determined that a crime has occurred, or it would be reasonable to believe that a crime as occurred, and that it’s not a civil matter, that report will get filed. If it’s a civil matter, the party is informed of that, and if it’s just un Either the officer or a detective, depending on the size and policies of the department involved, will follow up and perform additional investigation, which will likely involve talking to you. A determination will be made as to whether they believe the allegation to be true, at which point the accused may be arrested, or a warrant obtained for their arrest. If it goes that far, your attorney argues the point for you in court. If the allegation is determined to be baseless, the department may choose to refer a case of filing a false report against the reporting party. This is rather rare, and generally involves very serious allegations, rape, kidnapping, etc., things that have caused huge community disruption and/or cost to municipalities or states in terms of manpower for searches, etc. Beyond that, you could potentially have a civil case for harassment, but those are difficult and expensive to prevail.

How do I report a police officer?

Different agencies have their own rules and regulations that must be followed in the event of an accusation against an officer.  Generally, they follow these protocols:You can go to, or call the police department and ask to talk to a supervisor. With most departments, there are strict rules that the officer's supervisor must follow if there is a complaint against an officer. You can remain anonymous. An investigation will follow, and a determination will be made whether a criminal act or a violation of department policy took place. If you have left your name and a means of contact, you will be notified as to the outcome of the investigation. There are several outcomes that may present themselves: Sustained, non-sustained (not enough evidence to prove a violation took place), Exonerated (the acts described took place, but there was a lawful reason), or Unfounded (no basis for a complaint).Be advised police officers have certain rights as well. If it can be shown that a person maliciously filed a complaint for the sole purpose of slandering the officer in question, the complainant can be subject to civil or criminal prosecution.Having said that, if you in good faith believe you have witnessed an officer commit a crime, I urge you to follow through with notification to the agency. The officer may have a history of such activity, and your asssassistance could be the remedy to get a bad cop off the street. Internal investigations are not fun for anyone involved, but they are necessary. It is essential they be done fairly and thoroughly to protect innocent officers from false accusations, to eliminate corrupt ones from the profession,  and to maintain the public's trust.

Can you report road rage to the police?

The DMV: Road rage is defined as aggressive or violent behavior stemming from a driver's uncontrolled anger at the actions of another motorist. You can report anything you want to the police, the question is what can they do about it and should you waste their time and your time reporting road rage. If you are in the lane next to a guy who is bright red and screaming and pounding his fists on his steering wheel, or has his arm as far out his window as he can get it flipping you or someone else off, you probably should just keep driving and try to get out of his way. The police can’t do anything about a person having a melt down while he’s stopped in bumper to bumper traffic. They won’t bother looking for someone who is screaming the f word at you via sign language either. Even though those things are aggressive behaviors, the person still isn’t a danger to others. You should call the highway patrol or police department if the person begins driving erratically and aggressively. If he is speeding through slow traffic doing sudden lane changes, not using his signal, tailgating people or you, cuts you off and stops short, basically seeming to be using his vehicle as a weapon, definitely call for help, report him. Of course if he points a gun or brandishes a knife or makes any kind of threat on your life , note the license plate and call for help.If you listen to the police scanner on your cell phone, listen to the highway patrol in your state or any state, you won’t have to wait long at all to hear the dispatcher tell the officers that a motorist has called in and reported another motorist for doing something illegal. I think that is how the highway patrol is getting a lot of its business since everyone has a phone in reach now. For that reason we should all think twice before we decide to break the laws on the roads, there are snitches everywhere who will call and report what you’re doing and make it a lot easier for the police to catch up and find you.

Can I file a police report for threats?

Yes you can. Just be sure to have ALL details, and if possible any and all witnesses to such threats, if possible, to collaborate your claim (story), as it’ll be your word against that of the person who made the threat(s) against/to you.It would even be beneficial in your behalf if you can get an audio recording of the threat(s) or even written (copy/ies) of the threat(s) if done in that manner to add to your report to the police.Verbal, written or other forms of threats against another person or persons, especially if threatening death or any form of bodily harm, is taken very seriously by any police agency and will be investigated to the fullest. The more and better the proof you can provide them, the better and sooner they can bring the person issueing the threat(s) to justice and in getting them convicted if/when found to be guilty of such threat(s).

Can a police officer modify a police report?

In a limited fashion, yes.Policy in my department is that an officer may modify a police report any time before final review by the Records department. To explain, when an officer writes a report, it is reviewed by a supervisor, who then either approves it or sends it back to the officer for clarification or corrections. After the supervisor approves the report, it is given to Records for a final review. After that review, the report is locked and no more edits are allowed by the system. If an officer needs to make a correction or clarification after supervisor approval but prior to Records approval, the officer is required to notify a supervisor about the correction. If something needs clarification later, then a supplemental narrative is opened and the clarification is made in the supplement, which then goes through the same approval process.Things may work differently in other departments.(Edit) As clarification, our report system has full audit capabilities and you can see who edited what and when (the system requires unique logins).

Can I report someone to the police online in the UK?

“Can I report someone to the police online in the UK?”First thing that came to mind was the CEOP, where you can report crime. Ths is the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Command, which enables the online reporting of cyber crime. This is usually for crimes implicating children on the Internet. However, if cybercrime is not your concern, CEOP may not be the best option as their focus is child safety on the Internet. Therefore, I present to you the following alternatives:CrimestoppersLocal policeNational Crime Agency (whether this is possible I'm not certain)CrimestoppersAn anonymous means of reporting crime, you can report to crimestoppers through their website http://www.crimestoppers-uk.org although if you feel the options are too limited you can call 0800 555 111. They are an independent organisation that takes anonymous crime reports and pass them on to the relevant authority, usually the local police.Local PoliceI'm not sure in what region of the UK you reside, therefore I will use London and my region as examples. My region beholds the great force known as the States of Jersey Police.I can report crime through their non-emergency number (in mainland UK it would be 101) or on their website. The website for the London Metropolitan Police Service for example, is Home - Metropolitan Police Service. Local forces tend to have a report crime form, however some forces may be yet to implement this. The Jersey Police implemented it not more than two years ago.NCA (National Crime Agency)Dubbed the ‘British FBI’, the NCA is an agency that deals with serious and/or nationwide crime. It is best to report to a local force though.Image courtesy: The GuardianFor further information please search your local force, ask an Officer or visit Police.uk. I'm happy to try to answer any further questions.
