Why will the volume not work when hooking a laptop to a TV using an HDMI cable?
For Windows:Your default sound device is most likely still set to be using your laptop speakers.Once you plug your TV in via HDMI, open your Sound control panel. In Windows 10 this is as simple as typing “Sound” into the search bar next to the start button and choosing the option that says Sound Control Panel. Older Windows operating systems you may have to go into control panel and select Sound.You should see (at least) two options here now, one will be Speakers, which will be set to default. These are your laptop speakers.I only have speakers plugged into my desktop at the moment so I only have one option, but to give you an idea of what the window looks like…The HDMI device will be another option. Click on the HDMI option, and click on the “Set Default” button at the bottom right-hand side of the window, right above the OK and Cancel buttons. UPDATED: I've seen this prank before, but never heard of it being self installed, which means it was a virus or Trojan Horse with this as its payload. If it is a screensaver then moving your mouse our using the keyboard should take it away from it, but the payload could of disabled both those and set the screensaver to auto run from start up (unheard of, but possible). Just in case, check both connections for the mouse and keyboard. Another possibility is that it's not a screensaver, but the desktop picture with your taskbar auto hidden and the desktop icons gone. You should be able to right click somewhere and change it back. If that doesn't work, you'll have to get rid of the malware (virus). On your working computer download Adaware (http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-2007/30... ) and Spybot – Search and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/downl... ). Save to a USB flash drive or CD. Boot up the infected laptop in safe mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml ) and run both scans and delete. If you can boot up in safe mode with networking, do that first and get the updates for both programs, then run the scan. Delete what you find. In then end, you may have to download HijackThis (http://www.download.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html ) in the same manner as above, run it in safe mode and email me the log and I can see what I can find to help.

How can I adjust the length of time my computer screen stays active before switching over to screensaver mode?
In Windows 8.1 right click the "Window" when in "desktop" mode. Then left click on "Search" and type in "screen saver". This will take you to the screen saver "window" where you can set which files will be used. Back in the time when cathode ray monitors were used, you could "burn in" a display by leaving the same picture on for too long. With modern LCD monitors this is no longer a problem and screen savers are used just for "entertainment" today. It is my personal opinion that instead of making computers "easier" to use, we are making things more difficult instead! For example, Windows 8.1 is "different" than Windows 8. Which in turn is different than Windows 7. I skipped "Vista", but Windows XP is different from the previous versions of Windows 9.x that preceded it. Then Chromebooks are "different" yet, although the OS is simpler to learn. (so far, as Google will likely "upgrade" it with time)
