First of all, you would expect "high-end" furniture to be expensive. (And to mention the Ashley brand and high-end in the same question and answer is ridiculous.) Perhaps you are not comparing apples to apples. No one would walk into a BMW dealership and say "Hey, you are overpriced. I can get a car for a lot less than this!" Yet people do this at furniture stores all the time. Most everyone understands there are differences between luxury cars and average cars. But there are many products consumers do not understand well. Furniture is at the top of the list. Thus your question. Online? Forget about it. Those people are using consumers' lack of product/industry knowledge and incorrect pre-conceived notions against them. What is the source of their supposed price advantage? It's made there? Wrong! Almost all wood products are made in Asia. Factory direct? Wrong! Those people are retailers. No furniture "factory" sells to consumers. Did you buy your last car from Detroit? If your local furniture store (or ANY retailer) is in fact overpriced, they will not stay in business very long. I cannot think of any long time successful store which sells its products/services at a higher price than its competitors sells the same or similar. One way to spot a good store is if they advertise product and price in print. If you knew you could offer the best prices in your market, you would want everyone to know it. If you couldn't, you'd go for jingles, etc. You would not advertise price because a competitor could advertise the same item for less and make a monkey out of you. Again, compare apples to apples. Give your high-end store the opportunity to explain WHY the high-end product is more than the low-end stuff. With furniture, there is much more than meets the eye. And it cannot be quantified, like horsepower for cars. The high-end consumer looks for style more than utilitarian function. A more budget minded consumer needs something that will "hold-up" because they cannot afford to replace it soon. High-end products go beyond that. Of course it will "hold-up"; now let's focus on design and decoration. Your best bet is to find a local retailer you trust. It will take some time on your part to really evaluate them. But if you find the right store for you, it is the surest way to be satisfied.

Though I do not know a whole lot about Ashley's retail stores, I do know the company well; the furniture retailer for whom I worked sales, customers service, and management was an Ashley dealer. I can only assume, as one of the other responses did, that they function in much the same way that other discount furniture retailers do. Furniture stores, as was mentioned, tend to have some definite sale times. Statistically, the big weekends of the year are memorial day and labor day. Those also tend to be the days of the biggest sales (generally a circus in the store, so check to see if they start sales prior to the actual holiday weekend).
