Where Are Some Southern Az Locations To Visit In The Fall Autumn Colors

What is Autumn (Fall) like in Phoenix,AZ and surround area?

They have Autumn folliage up in the White Mountains in northeastern AZ and in Flagstaff first. That's the kind of autumn you are use to but AZ has mainly yellow leaves. We don't get as many red and orange leaves here. Here in the Phoenix metropolitan area after the weather cools off, you can see some trees with autumn colored leaves but not anything in numbers like they have up north. Winter is our best weather where we attract all the "snow birds" from the eastern states and Canada. It's cooler here then - but not a trace of snow (only up north). We're going up to the White Mountains this weekend to get our "autumn fix".

Is better to visit the US in summer time or winter time?

In general, Memorial to Labor day whole of U.S is open/active i.e last week of May to first week of September you will have all the activities across U.S. NYC, Niagara, D.C ( no difference, anytime you can visit D.C), Chicago, Vegas ( only if you like casino and mostly warm even in winters ), Arizona ( Grand canyon, antelope canyon are best visited during summer though it’s super hot, at least it would be much better than limited stuffs in winter). Moreover almost all the national parks, state parks, theme parks, water parks, activities in beautiful lakes like lake Michigan, lake superior etc… could be available and enjoyable only in summer. Californian oceans and lakes are colder than in Florida. Cali may be warm, still lot of water activities won't leave you with much of a choice during winter. Btw, Florida is the BEST across the year, especially Orlando, key West, Clearwater — Preferably more the south you go more warmer it will be. Warning: December will be extremely crazy. Universal, Disney and other popular parks will be insanely crowded. Fast pass, despite it is high - priced, it's worth the money rather than waiting for an hour or 2 for each rides. More than 30+ state cars you can witness during the December time of the year. Am excluding Hawaii which is outrageously expensive even from U.S. However if you want to have a snowy visit, go to Colorado. In general, for sightseeing, besides Florida most of the places are shutdown across U.S during winter. In addition, even in Florida, panama city beach won't have much of activity. Go south further. In summary, summer has all of it in U.S than skiing winters.

What’s the best time of the year to visit Arizona?

That’s a pretty easy one. The short answer is April or October. But it does depend on what you want to do and where you want to do it. Flagstaff in the North has great snow skiing throughout the winter, and the White Mountains in Eastern AZ are great for camping or visiting all summer long! Many ‘snow birds’ haul their campers to the Quartzsite area in Western AZ and stay there all winter! Yuma in the South boasts the most sunny days of any town in the United States. And don’t forget the Colorado River and places like Lake Havasu City for water sports and great hospitality. Did I forget to mention the Grand Canyon? Dear me! So come to Arizona. Welcome! You won’t be disappointed.

Do trees in warm climates still lose their leaves in the fall?

Some do, some don't. As with so many things in the plant world, it all depends on the species. In the sub-tropical areas of the USA (most of Florida, some of California, a bit of Texas) there are trees that lose their leaves in the fall, trees that retain the majority of their leaves all year, and trees that lose their leaves in the spring. In Florida, where I live, some trees that lose leaves in the fall (read that as mid-november)  are bald cypress, Florida maple, sweet gum, crepe myrtle, and golden rain tree and some oaks. Trees that lose their leaves in spring (that begins in Feb and runs through April) are jacaranda, many oak varieties. Trees that are green all year are magnolia, some oaks, camphor, citrus. Trees that are green all year actually drop old leaves during much of the year and make new ones to replace them as they go. Or, in the instance of camphor, they stay green all winter and don't drop old leaves until the new ones have all opened in the spring.Oaks are amazing. You'll notice that they're on all my lists. In Florida, not only do different species have different drop and new-growth schedules, they also differ from season to season within each species. Thus, while  a particular variety may generally lose 1/3 of its foliage in March (for instance,) in some years it will lose all its foliage.  Oak trees are the kings of the forest in the Northern Hemisphere, having over 600 species, adapted to almost all environmental systems, from sub-arctic to tropical. All hail the Quercus!
