What should I do with a turtle I found in my yard?
It looks like you found a Box turtle.Don’t worry, even though they are taxonomically a “pond turtle” they can survive very happily as entirely terrestrial little guys.Chance are he was not moved by a hawk but has been your neighbor for years and this is just the first time you saw him.It is also quite possible at this time of year that this is a female off on an adventure to lay eggs.Unless the turtle is in imminent danger in your yard, you should let him/her be. If you toss him/her into the river it will die. If you relocate them they will likely die on a roadway trying to find their way back.
