Where Can I Buy Little Pet Turtle

Why can't you buy little turtles any more?

(Yes, turtles ARE reptiles!)

The story is kind of long, but here is the short version:

The way people were keeping baby turtles in the 'old days' tended to kill the baby turtle in a few months. Baby turtles (usually Red-ear sliders and Painted turtles, but other species as well) need:
- at least 5 gallons of water for proper exercise,
- good quality lighting including some UltraViolet light for development,
- good diet that does not include lettuce, hamburger, hot dogs, or the packaged foods that were mostly fly and ant parts
- and more.

In fact, baby turtles are actually tricky pets to raise well. Much harder than tropical fish, for example.

Well, some reptile conservation groups banded together to try to stop the horrible slaughter- not only were far too many pets dying, but gathering the babies in the wild was destroying entire ecosystems.

They tried several angles, but the one that worked was a ban on turtles under 5" (different lengths in other places) because the young turtles so often carried Salmonella- and that was because they were usually caught in the nice warm, nutrient-filled water of waste-water treatment plants.

The Salmonella scare worked, but it is really kind of dumb since only a few turtles, even from sludge ponds, host Salmonella, while paper money is more likely to carry it.

How much do little pet turtles cost at petco?

Don't buy any animal out of the blue. This is very irresponsible and will not be good for the animal in the long run... (if there is a long run... most baby turtles that are purchased from pet stores don't make it past their first year when purchased on a whim like this).

Go to where you plan on purchasing the turtle from, look around, ask what KIND of turtles they are, ask if they've got a care sheet (or better yet, a book on the care and maintenance of whatever species you're considering) and spend some time doing a bit of research beforehand so you can head off problems that will bring you back here asking "I just got a turtle, what do I feed it?" "I got a turtle, should it's shell be soft?" "Why won't my turtle open it's eyes?" (all very bad questions for people to have to ask, but they're asked here every single stinking day and it drives us nuts.)

And remember, after you've gotten what the turtle NEEDS, you'll probably have spent close to $200... and that's before you've even gotten the turtle.

Think ahead. It's at least a 30 year committment, and it cannot live in a little bowl.

How long do little turtles at pet stores live?

Most turtles purchased on the spur of the moment from roadside vendors don't make it past their first year. But, if you take care of them properly, 35-40 years... or more... it has a lot to do with the dedication level of the people keeping them.

What should you know before buying a pet turtle?

A proper turtle enclosure is fairly involved and expensive. Many turtle owners don't understand what they're in for when they buy a turtle; that little 4 incher will eventually be up to a foot long. And turtles are by no means a short-term pet. When well cared for, they live beyond 30 years, and with excellent care, beyond 40. First, turtles need fairly large aquariums to stay healthy. Once your turtle grows past 8 inches (length of shell), you should use at minimum a 20 gallon tank. Really, 30 is better.Second, they need a basking area (a flat stone, or some wood to climb onto) and a heat lamp. If your turtle has little access to natural sunlight, then you'll need to use UV light as well. Heat, UVA, and UVB. Putting them on a timer is helpful.Third, a submersible heater to keep the water temperature up. When reptiles are too cold, they lose appetite and immune system strength. Their metabolism and every other system relies on staying warm, like a mammal, except that they can't create their own heat like a mammal. So, the water temp should be about 75-80 F (and 80-85 F under the basking light.)Fourth, filtration and cleaning. Turtle turds are a lot bigger than fish turds. A cannister filter is best, though it's the most expensive choice. It won't clog, though, and it saves you doing more cleaning and water changes. There is a lot more to know when you have a turtle because they are so different than other pets. Reptiles have different health issues than mammals, and aquatic habitats bring about different issues than terrariums. At a former workplace of mine, we would take in unwanted turtles and adopt them out as summer residents in people's backyard ponds. Most of them were of the wrong species to survive our winters, so many of them came back to us in the fall. Most people who can't handle their turtle anymore don't bother bringing it to a rescue, they just dump them, which is an awful idea. At worst, it won't be suitable for your local habitat and die. At best, you may be introducing a foreign species that threatens the environment. So, please keep in mind that, although turtles are really cool, they aren't cheap or convenient. If you feel that a turtle will be too much to handle once it grows up a bit, consider a different pet instead. Perhaps a lizard that lives in a dry terrarium.

Where can you buy pet turtles in virginia beach?

Highly doubtful it is important. How much research have you done? Are you ready to take care of a high maintenance animal (contrary to popular myth)?

Consider how BIG of a tank you will need for one turtle! For each INCH of turtle, you need TEN GALLONS to accommodate it! So a five inch turtle NEEDS a minimum of a 50 gallon tank with HIGH filtration.

Is it illegal to have a turtle as a pet in India? If not, how is the experience of having one as a pet? Does it respond to you and listen? How difficult is it to manage a turtle as a pet?

Yes.....I have seen some answers saying it's illegal but they are partially wrong. The Indian turtle species are illegal because of wildlife protection acts. But turtles such as Red Ear Sliders and Painted turltles etc which are native american are legal. And about the experience... They eat manufactured food, worms, cabbage etc.And they do respond but not like a cat or dog or any mammal....they will associate your presence with food and will be excited on seeing you. They don't take handling very well and may even bite if too stressed. They produce a lot of waste and will require a big space and a good filteration system. And they live long...long enough.
