Ah, glorious Tamil Nadu!I’m a Malayalee from Thrissur. I currently live in Salem, Tamil Nadu.Yeah, the Steel City.I’ve been living here for 18 years and to be honest, I find it quite boring. I mean, one, there’s no entertainment here, compared to Chennai or Coimbatore and two, you feel bored after you stay at one place for so long. I so long for the metropolitan life in Chennai, where I stayed for half an year.Anyways, what is that I find so interesting about Tamilians and Tamil Nadu as a whole?One, you guys speak Tamil and we speak Malayalam, which is almost the daughter of Tamil. (Then again, I’m no linguist. Please advise if in the contrary). Now, while I find the regular street Tamil especially between two teenagers to be loaded with expletives (like it’s so many p***as per second :P), the formal version of Tamil is music to the ears! The way they articulate expressions, the words, the spacing, the indents etc make it so melodious.The Tamil script is well, different. It’s not inspired by Sanskrit phonological rules, which Malayalam is, so sometimes, I do find certain words confusing to pronounce. That does not negate the fact that it is absolutely beautiful!I can read, write and speak fluent Tamil although I mix my tenses and pronouns up, leading to very embarrassing situations sometimes.
