Where Can I Find Joe Williams Version Of

Where can I find a recording of 'Crow Jane' By Big Joe Williams?

I'm not aware of Big Joe ever having recorded Crow Jane. Many others did though-Sonny Terry, Skip James, Jack Spires, Blind Boy Fuller, Cephas & Wiggins, Sleepy John Estes if memory serves me, etc. It is primarily a part of the Piedmont tradition, while Big Joe is from the Delta tradition. Where did you hear that Big Joe covered it?

Julius Daniels version is from 1927

Big Joe didn't record on his own until the mid 30s, so he definitely isn't the first to record it, if, in fact, he ever did record it.

Edit: I've checked my copies of Dixon & Godrich's "Blues & Gospel Records 1890-1943, and Sheldon Harris' "Blues Who's Who", as well as Stefan Wirz's online discography http://www.wirz.de/music/american.htm-no... confirm a Big Joe recording of Crow Jane.

@Longshots-no offense, but your answer points out the pitfalls of relying solely on the internet. 3 of your links (the first two and the first youtube vid) originate from the same person. The 3rd, 4th, & 5th links all refer to the same poem by Amiri Baraka (LeRoi Jones), not a song. They also refer to "Mississippi Joe Williams", not a nickname I've ever seen associated with Big Joe in 35 years of researching the blues. Your final link is merely a clip of a blues program. None of the links substantiates either origination of the tune with Big Joe, nor a recording by him of the tune.

P.S. Blues Who's Who credits Crow Jane to Nehemiah (Skip) James, Crow Jane Blues to Sonny Terry, and Crow Jane Woman to Ida Cox.

Hahaha, ok pal, you must be right then. By any chance does your "blues blog" consist entirely of cut and paste internet sources like all your answers here? Do you have any understanding of protocols regarding research, such as peer review? Do you even understand that "Mississippi's Big Joe Williams" and "Mississippi Joe Williams" are two entirely different things, and that the first is no different from saying "Minnesota's Bob Dylan" and doesn't mean that was a name the person was ever known by? I suspect not. In the words of an old cliche, me thinks thou doth protest too much.
Actually, it is a contest-that's why there's a "BEST" answer. However, I could care less about that. I do care deeply about the blues though. An art form that has had its history burdened by far too much misinformation. And...when I see it happening here I'll challenge it every time.

Cleveland Big Cat Williams 1963 vs Iron Mike Tyson 1988?

Hello Irene and another fun match up! Iron Mike Tyson seemed unbeatable at one time during his career as he had those fast vicious punches which often left his opponent on the canvas as if they had been ht by a train! Cleveland Williams is also known for his awesome power as well and had 58 knockouts in his career with probably the most impressive being a 7th round KO of Ernie Terrell. He was all standing about 6'3" and had an 80" reach too. As you said, Tyson had decision wins against Tucker and Bonecrusher Smith and was also severely tested against Razor Ruddock too and I don't believe any of these guys were in the same league as a prime Big Cat Williams who was not only powerful but a fast and agile boxer too so this is how I see this fight going:

The fight

Tyson comes out strong against Williams looking to end matters early but is caught with some good shots as Williams also came to fight and is not scared of the intimidating Tyson. In the early rounds both men would trade evenly but Tyson is getting tagged with the cleaner shots as the fight goes into the latter rounds. After a hard exchange in round 11, Williams lands a bone crunching left right combo sending Tyson down to the canvas. Tyson makes it to his feet but is in no shape to continue as the referee halts the contest.

Winner Williams TKO11
