Do they sell Catnip seeds at WallMart?

WalMart does sell Catnip. I just bought some on Saturday. They are in the lawn and garden section with all the other seeds. They should be with the other herbs (dill, parsley, thyme). That's where I got mine. My cats absolutely love it. I have one that will rub her whole body all over the plant and then chew it for a while.

Catnip, Nepeta cataria, is easy to grow outside. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil.

Once you buy the plants and plant them you should water every couple of days for several days as they get established but after that, stop watering. They are plants that do best on the dry side.

They do not need "good" soil or fertilizers either. Once they are established they will grow fine without any help.

If they get scraggly and overgrown you can shear or snip about 1/3 of the plant and it will grow back fairly quickly.

Give the fresh leaves and stems to your cat or let them dry completely to save.

Google "garden centers" and "houston" and call all the hits that come up to ask whether they carry catnip plants.

Do B&Q sell catnip seeds?

Nepeta cataria (catnip) and Nepeta fassenii (cat mint) are both favorites of cats. Beware: both plants are part of the MINT family and can become aggressive!

Almost any rack of seeds - in nurseries, Home Depot, Lowes, etc., will include catnip and/or cat mint!!

Catnip grows easily in light soil and self-sows readily. Some cats love to roll around on the plant. If necessary, cover the crown of the plant with a inverted wire basket -- stems will grow through. You can also insert short sticks around the plants to keep cats from rolling all over them!

Grow plants in full sun or partial shade. They are not fond of high heat with humidity.

You can go to the Petsmart in St. Louis Park, take the Xenia exit off 394, It's right by the Double Tree and the Home Depot. They have both dried (many varieties) and live plants you could buy.

Will catnip plant draw neighborhood cats?

In my neighborhood, yes. I have lots of catnip as I encourage it to self sow in my yard. I am often visited by other peoples cats. Sometimes they'll be so attracted to a particular plant they'll tromp all over everything around it and rub against it so much it's just a bunch of nubby shoots trying to grow up.

I also have it in large planters on my deck and one bold kitty likes to sleep curled up in that pot on top of the catnip...which is what my cat used to do before he passed earlier this year.

Did you know catnip oil is a more effective mosquito repellant than DEET? It's true, about 10-20 times more effective. One of the reasons I grow so much of it. It also deters others bugs as well. Whenever I'm pestered by bugs, I pick a piece of catnip, rub the leaves between my hands then rub my hands over the exposed parts of my body...no more bugs. A wonderful thing when a mosquito or two have gotten into the house at night...
