Where Did The Iroquois Indians Descend From

Where did the Iroquois indians descend from?

The Iroquois are a confederation of the Mohawk, Cayuga, Seneca, Oneida, Onondaga, and Tuscarora, all Iroquoian-speaking peoples who originate with the same wave of Proto-Indians as most other Indians, excluding the Tlingit, Dene, and Inuit. Their origins as a culture can be traced back to the Ohio country, where they eventually split from the Huron and Cherokee among others.

All Indians, as all humans, descend from Africa. American Indians passed through Asia and Siberia before the people we today consider to be 'Asians' arrived and therefore should not be considered Asian. In fact, the closest relatives to American Indians in the Old World live mostly in isolated parts of today's Russia.

As a culture and a linguistic group, however, their origin is in the Ohio River Valley.

What are the geographic preferences for Iroquois Native Americans to establish in?

Iroquois is an unbrella name for the Iroquois Confederation made up of six separate tribes. Onondaga, Oneida, Seneca, Mohawk, Cayuga and Tuscarora. Each has a separate ‘reservation and government and are in the Northeast mostly in the state of New York ir near there. Which by no means implies everyone descended from those tribes lives in those areas.

Why did the Cherokee split from the Iroquois?

Some oral history says that there was a war. in former times.. The Taldega who were ancestors of the Cherokee held the mounds there. The Delaware came from the west on their migrations from the North West … and attacked the Taldega. The war continued for a long time. Until at last the Delaware were victorious..The ancestors of Taldega stock took refuge in the Appalachians.. Battles and hostile relations continued through time..Other group also came and in time became part of Cherokee Society.

What were the specific area territories of Iroquois, Algonquian, Cherokee, Seminole?

My parents are from New Orleans, LA and West VA, by way of North Carolina. What were probably the tribes of Native Americans associated with those territories? I have narrowed it down to these four (in the Eastern Woodlands), but not sure where each of them were and when.

What were the customs of the Iroquois Tribe and why were they important?

The Iroquois (People of the Longhouse) is a Confederacy of tribes of the Northeast Woodlands. They call themeselves Haudenosaunee. The Confederacy was originally made up of the Mohawk, Oneida, Cayuga, Onondaga, and Seneca. Later the Tuscarora were included.

They were governed by the Iroquois Great Council, elected by the clan mothers (matriarchs) of the tribes. The Iroquois Confederacy was a representative democracy used as a model by America's founding fathers.

They lived in villages of longhouses, which were large wood-frame buildings covered with sheets of elm bark, up to a hundred feet long, and each one housed an entire clan (as many as 60 people.)

Were Mohawk Indians enemies with the Cherokee Indians?

The Cherokee Nation was several hundred miles from where the Mohawks were from so no. But, Cherokee and Mohawk are both Iroquoian languages and it is thought that around 3500 years ago the Cherokee lived in the Great lakes area that the Mohawks and the other tribes of the Iroquois inhabited. It is not known why the Cherokee moved to what is now the Southeastern USA, but it is possible that at one time the Cherokee and the Mohawks were friends rather than enemies.

Iraquaw indian Tribe or something like it?

Although there is no such tribe as the "Iraquaw" that doesn't mean you don't descend from Native Ancestry. You need to do the genealogy part of the equation to find out where and when your ancestors may have tied in with a Native Tribe or Nation.

It does sound like a mix of Iroquois and Choctaw, but the information given about the Iroquois being part of the 5 civilized tribe is wrong. They were not... The information about being from a mixture of two tribes may be correct. Some joined larger "tribes" as a means of protection either from other "tribes" or the "whites". Other were merged when one tribe overtook the other. The Iroquois formed a confederacy made up of 6 tribes, all from the northeast part of the U.S. The Cherokee had other tribes that joined with them also mostly from the central eastern "states". The 5 tribes that make up the 5 civilized tribes that ended up in Oklahoma are the: Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Seminole.
