Where Do I Start Learning About Cars

How do I start learning how to fix a car?

If you want to learn basics start off in the Automotive Section of your local library and
see what they have available on " Basic Automotive Repairs " or Basic Car Care.

If it's a career you wish to pursue, follow the advice from the previous answers.

There's so many good books available to give you the knowledge. The hands-on repairs
are going to come with the assistance of someone who has the patience to teach you
and the automotive knowledge needed to teach you correctly.

If you'd like the names of a few good books, or internet sites , try :

Where should I start if want to learn about cars?

I didn't go this route, but I would start with small engines to learn the 4 strokes, ignition and cam/crank timing. Basic fuel systems and effects of running lean or rich and reading spark plugs to tell. Engine vacuum and what it's all about cause that is one of my staples for diagnosing an engine mechanical issue. Ignition is another area single cylinder engines could be helpful, except they utilize a magneto instead of a coil. Then when you got that there is no better engine to learn on than my beloved SBC. (Small Block Chevrolet) Your key to all this is reading though, it's truly amazing how much you can learn reading. Anymore questions feel free to message me, I enjoy seeing people want to learn.

How can I start learning car electronics?

"Necessity is the mother of invention.”Once a time making of cars was majorly with mechanical parts, but today electronics constitutes major part. From the engine to music system..to digital clock…to safety locking system, in everything electronics is being observed.Due to the faster growth of requirements such as fuel efficiency, security and safety, electronics took a major role in automobiles. To get the concept of car electronics, we need to know the electronics involved in the cars today.Few key roles of electronics in cars :Electronic control unit (ECU) : The ECU consists of sensors and microcontrollers, which govern the flow of fuel into the engine. It decides the amount of fuel to be injected inside the engine with the help of few sensors and other components. The main aim of using the ECU is to increase the fuel efficiency of a car.Brakes : Anti-lock brake systems (ABS) are becoming increasingly popular in cars. These let you stop faster and they let you steer even while you have applied the brakes.Dashboards : It is the portion where drivers interact the most. The dashboard of a car is where we have GPS, audio systems, air-conditioner controls, etc. You are pretty well aware of these functions.Anti Theft systems : Car alarms are the most popular way of preventing theft. Different forms of sensors like car-alarm door sensor, car-alarm windows and pressure sensor, and car-alarm motion and tilt sensors alerts you from thefts.Parking sensorsAnti sensing wipers : With the auto-sensing wiper system, wipers will turn on the moment they detect rain. The sensor, on the basis of the moisture on the screen, determines the speed of the wiper movementAuto-sensing lights : Here, the headlamps of the car glow automatically when it starts getting dark. The fundamental behind it is the light-dependent resistor (LDR) or optical sensors used in the circuit of the headlamp. So as the light intensity decreases to reach a certain value, the circuit triggers the headlights to turn on.Personal safety systems : Like seat belt warnings, alerts when door is open, Airbags etc.In future, with the AI’s self driving cars, lot more electronics and technology gets involved in automobiles.

I really want to learn about cars. Where or how do I start?

I didn't need to ask this. I just started reading up on web about every single thing that I have heard about cars. For example, I used to go on page that was about Turbochargers. while reading I saw a link to VGT (Variable Geometry Turbo), which interested me immediately, and I went to that. That led me to another tab where I searched for a way to make something that spins at 200.000 rpm change it's geometry and how it influences its flow, pressure and speed. That than led me to asking myself how it doesn't throw mixture in cylinders off balance. That is how I learned what is Stoichyometric mixture in engines and how much it is (14.7:1). Basically, I was enormously curious about it, and I went to Wiki to find an article, and I usually ended up reading about 20 of them about various car-related stuff. That and sites such as How Stuff Works will get you started. For example, on steering and suspension alone there is far, far more than you think is to it. Engines are a breed on it's own, and you will need either a degree or really, really long time to understand advanced background of it, since it includes various background mechanics - Fluid Dynamics, Material Resistance, Machine Components etc.Basically I would start with something you are interested in. Say you want to know how steering works. Type that in to Google and read. That should lead you to more things, learn, learn and learn. Also, if you have conditions to, buy a old banger, or even a wreck. Take it apart, use internet and figure out what is wrong. Than try to fix it. While doing this you will remember parts and ask yourself what it is and why is it there. That will all lead you to understanding it, and once you understand it, you  know it.

How can I start learning about cars to become a Mechanic?

I was in IT for several years, eventually working as a technical writer creating documentation for end users. I wanted to spend more time with my kids so I took a job as a service writer at a Saturn dealer. (Opal/Vauxhall cars rebranded essentially) I knew the basics, but watching, studying, completing vast amounts of training and spending as much time with technicians taught me a lot. I would recommend you find anyway to get into the field and then pay attention. Dealerships often hire porters to shuffle cars around, perform detailing, give customers rides and general assistance around the dealership. These are usually entry level and can help you get your foot in the door. Pay attention to what is going on around you but don't hinder operations and you will learn. Spend free time on Youtube studying anything you don't understand.  Listen and watch as much as possible. Work your butt off and you could score a lube tech spot, changing oil and doing simple maintenance.  Attention to detail is key. Certification and a degree if possible will help immensely. Study a lot. Be prepared to work extremely hard, with little reward at first. Learn to shut up and listen. Don't let your ego get the best of you. Stroking egos will get you places but be cautious which ego you stroke. Good luck.

From where shall I begin learning about cars?

You start with Automotive Mechanics by Donald Anglin and William Crouse. Then you can go on to Race Car Dynamics by Milliken N Milliken. And remember dont just mug up the books, try to ease through the stuff and imagine how each thing happens in an actual car in the real world. Also refer to auto.howstuffworks.com and/or carbible.com and Engineering Explained Channel on Youtube. If possible join a team in college or do related projects. Go for training,  there are loads available out there.Maybe you can opt for an online course on Vehicle Dynamics.

Im a girl. i want to learn about cars and their parts where do i start?

You have already started! You have taken the first step and that is to go and ask questions and be willing to learn.

Get you an encyclopaedia of cars from the library or amazon.com they are not much that will help you learn the different models and styles of cars. Most folks cant tell a Studebaker from a Nash or a Cuda ;) but a book like that will help you to broaden your knowledge of the names and types of cars out there. Did you know they made a Chrysler once with a turbine (jet) engine? http://www.allpar.com/mopar/turbine.html

Once you get a feel for the different models and want to know what makes them run read up on the basic of internal engines and the rest of the drive train.

Then I would suggest checking to see if your school offers auto shop as an elective or if they dont do they have a car club?

Check with your parents also and see who does the work on their cars and then talk to the shop and maybe they would consider letting you do some intern work after school or during the summer.
You might spend alot of time watching or sweeping up but by being around you take in knowledge.

Now you are more comfortable around cars and know a little more about tools and what kind of cars you like look for a beater. A vehicle you can get cheap or free for any number of reasons.
A older car or truck will have less electronics to mess with but can have other issues like wore out suspension or rust.
Learn on that car so if you break something mom and dad won kill you if you break something :)

Is learning how to drive a car difficult?

Am 20 and never driven a car before and I want to start learning but seem intimidated on how difficult it could be. Nobody in my family know how to drive so I would have to go to a driving school which is fine. How long do you think it would take for me to fully know how to drive and is it going to be difficult?
