Where To Get Material For Sewing

How do you sew with satin or other silky material?

It’s just a skill you have to practice. Don’t make your first silky item be your prom dress.(Ann Taylor 100% silk) ann taylor pink 100% silk scoop neck shift dressTry making a simple shift dress first, out of one of the less challenging silks, like dupioni. And honestly Bemberg Rayon Lining is a fantastic material to practice on, and not so expensive. It’s the original artificial silk. The thicker coat-lining satins are quite suitable for silky shift dresses; for example Kasha Lining - Dark Red (poly/cotton blend) with a flannel texture on the back for easier sewing.Save the satin charmeuse for when you have more experience. When pinning, only pin within the seam allowances, so that no pin marks will show on the garment. In fact, try to avoid pinning if you can. Use weights to hold down the pattern for cutting, and use your rotary cutter for straight seams so you don’t have to use shears. The goal is to keep the fabric as flat as possible during cutting-out.Sewing a natural fabric like silk or rayon will be a little easier than polyester, because the natural threads still have some “teeth” to grip onto the other layer you are sewing it to — silk and rayon do not slip around as much as polyester is what I am trying to say.50 types of Silk fabrics to make your clothes - Sew Guide

Is tape measure a material for sewing?

A tape measure is extremely valuable when you are sewing. Most items a person may choose to make involves a specific size. Your tape measure will also ensure you are cutting your fabric correctly.A tape measure is invaluable when cutting out fabric pattern pieces. It is important to place pieces correctly on fabric prior to cutting. Most often a piece is placed parallel to the selvage or the finished edge of the fabric. This would be referred to as “on the grain” which is typically marked on a pattern piece with a long arrow. It is relatively easy to ensure one has placed the piece correctly by measuring (with measuring tape) the distance from the top of the arrow to the selvage and also the bottom of the arrow. If this is done correctly, the distance should be the same.Miscellaneous uses for your tape would include using it to mark the correct length of a hem or pant leg, determining how much elastic you might need to accommodate someone’s waist size and just determining a person’s size in order to select the correct size- be it for ready made clothing or an article you’re planning to sew.I hope this information will help you to see the importance of both having, and using, a tape measure when sewing. Very best of luck!

My cat swallowed a piece of my sewing material?

its possible that it will be okay, but its also possible that the material could get stuck at the opening from the stomach into the intestines, around the base of the tongue, and where the intestine turns into the large intestine. If he seems fine, eating and not vomiting and not working his tongue funny, watch for the fabric to come out the other end. Try to open his mouth and look under his tongue (this is hard, don't get bitten!) to be sure you cannot see the fabric. If it gets stuck, it will need surgery to remove it. You might call your vet in the morning and ask them if they want to go ahead and do X rays tomorrow to see where it might be and if it looks like its passing ok. Some cats are weird that way...I have had to remove sewing needles with thread in them from cats intestines before!

What materials will I need for a sew in weave?

I know I need the hair, but do I just get wefted hair? What is also this about a closure piece? Can you part closure pieces anywhere? I was just thinking about buying a 12 in Indian Remy weft hair. How long does a sew in last also? I am going to college and there are no hair salons nearby. Help!

How do I buy cut and sew clothing material?

You can buy fabric off the internet: fabric stores, eBay, hobby stores, and there are also lists on Yahoo! or Facebook where people sell fabric - usually from what they’ve bought & realize that they aren’t going to use or leftovers from a home décor project where they bought a 20 yard bolt and didn’t need the whole thing or something like that.I have cut fabric on the floor (in college or when cutting panels almost three meters or over three feet long for making drapes for my new house). I have used a dining room table with a cardboard cutting mat to protect the wood (if you find large cans from a bulk food display - or paint cans) you can raise the dining room table to a height more comfortable for cutting fabric on. I have used that cardboard cutting mat on a bed - my back would have been happier if I’d raised the bed - but I wasn’t ready to raise & lower the bed every day to let me get into it without a step ladder - beds are heavy). I ended up buying myself a cutting table for a present one December - they were on sale at a good discount! It’s almost the correct height - I’m taller than the average woman.Sewing - all you really need is a needle & thread for hand sewing - but a sewing machine is going to speed things up a lot - plus you’ll get a consistent stitch length with little to no practice! Hand sewing takes time to get a stitch with a consistent tension & size…and it will be easier to sew knits as all you’ll need to do is select a stretch stitch on a modern sewing machine & changed out the needle to one with a “ball point” so that it doesn't cut or break the threads in the fabric. All else is “practice, practice, practice”!

What is the best material to make sewing patterns with?

If you plan to use the pattern a few times, I suggest you use architectural/engineering tracing paper. It comes in a few of widths and generally white or yellow. It is transparent as well as sturdier than art tracing paper and not as nearly as expensive. Good art stores like Dick Blick or Ultrecht’s and Amazon has them.If you are going to use a pattern a great deal then I would use muslin or gingham (make sure the grain is square first before drafting to reduce warping) for patterns that will be lasting. If cost is an newsprint, as in newspaper paper, can be used.

Sewing machine won't sew stretchy material.?

you need to go to the store and buy a needle especially made for stretchy fabrics. this happened to me when i was sewing something sheer and the needle made all the difference.

How much material will it take me to sew a pair of pants for an infant?

If the fabric width is at least 54 - 60 inches then 1/2 yard should be plenty. The more narrow the fabric (when folded in half) the more you will need in length.Happy Sewing!!
