Replacement reusable shopping bag bottoms?
Anyone know if you can buy replacements for the black plastic that is found at the bottom on reusable shopping bags? Mine always break because the people at the grocery store overload the bags. The bags are still good, so I just want to replace the bottom "stiffners". The bags only cost $1, so I'd like to spend less than that per piece. Have you bought the reusable shopping bags Walmart is selling?
I got one for Christmas. At our local store, you have to buy them from the customer service desk so they know that you own them if you have them in the store. They are thinner than I like. I have yet to use it. I like the Acme Workhorse and Chico Bags better since the fold up and fit in my slacks or jeans pocket. I love my bags. I have them from everywhere I shop. I feel like I am supporting the main-stream grocery stores efforts to go green if I buy one from them, so I made a promise to myself, that if I ever forgot them, I wouldn't use plastic, I would buy another. Well, I have about 6 now and can do a huge shopping trip and not use one single plastic or paper bag. Everytime I go into a store I get a few weird looks, but I don't care because I like to think that I am bringing some attention to the idea. I also constantly get into discussions with the person behind me or in front of me or the cashier. Often I have to tell the bagger (if I don't bag my own) that I really appreciate his/her thoughtfulness in wanting to pack everything in plastic before it goes in my cloth bags, but I really don't need them. I have also bought a bag for someone behind me in line who needed just a tiny bit more encouragement to switch to cloth bags. I figure it was a worthwhile thing to do. I have never had anyone think I was shoplifting, I actually get a lot of positive feedback from people who are thinking about changing or haven't really thought about it before. The grocery stores (here in Florida that means Publix, Winn-Dixie, Walgreens - in CA, Bel Air and Raleys), Whole Foods, IKEA, Ace Hardware, and I bet even Walmart have bags for sale for about $1 each. I am sure they have them where you are too, you might need to look or ask. Every city needs a few people to start the trend - so be that person. You may get a couple of funny looks until people understand, but think about educating others and letting them know it can be done and they are actually much easier to use and store than the million plastic bags they give you at the store. Oh yah, one thing - if you are getting raw chicken, get the plastic bag and then save it for next time. Just put it in your cloth bag unless it has juice on it. Or you can wash them. I have a little, flexible cooler bag that I can clean out and is waterproof for things that might leak or frozen stuff. And NEVER, NEVER use the produce bags for apples, potatoes, etc. Just put them into your cart. It takes forever for them to decompose (literally) and you use them for what ...15 minutes?
