Is North Carolina State University a good college?
When people ask if ANY college or university is "good," it's so subjective. It's regionally accredited, for starters. That guarantees at least a certain minimum amount of "good." Any college you go to should be accredited by an agency approved by the US Department of Education (USDE) and/or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA); and one should always look-up any school in which one's interested in either the USDE and/or CHEA databases at: http://www.chea.org/search http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation If any school in which one's interested isn't in at least ONE of those databases, then STAY AWAY because it's not really accredited. It may SAY it is, but it isn't. That's just a fact. And remember that "diploma mills" flat-out LIE about their "accreditation" all the time... and often make-up fake accreditors. So always rely, solely, on those two databases. North Carolina State University 20 Watauga Club Drive Raleigh, NC 27607 United States Phone: (919) 515-2011 Web: www.ncsu.edu is in both of those databases. It's "regionally" accredited by: Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Belle S. Wheelan, President 1866 Southern Lane Decatur, GA 30033 Phone: 404-679-4500 Fax: 404-679-4528 Email: bwheelan@sacscoc.org Web: www.sacscoc.org So, no matter what, you won't be shooting yourself in the foot to attend it. Beyond that, though, "good," like "beauty," is in the eye of the beholder. Hope that helps.
How good is UIC for research in Computer Science? Is it better than the North Carolina State University?
In June 2007, the Association for Computing Machinery did a ranking by publications in journals (i.e. on scholarly research). That ranking had UIC tied for 34th with Arizona and Caltech. NCSU tied for 47th with UC-Davis. I wouldn't trust US News to rank grad CS programs. Their statistical methodology is poor/scary. So I'd say UIC is better than NCSU. Chicago is also a much better place to be for lifestyle and getting internships.
