How can you clarify misunderstandings when communicating?

The hard part in my opinion is not the clarification but noticing the misunderstanding. Our brains are great at interpreting signals others send us (which is what communication is all about, making sense of what we hear and see etc.), but our brains are bad when it comes to self-assessing the viability of this interpretation. There is usually no point in defining who caused the misunderstanding. As you can see in the example image above, no one made a mistake, both guys just used a different set of data to interpret the verbal information.Communication is by nature not precise, so the key to avoiding misunderstandings is to train yourself to be alert as to where your interpretation of information received might possibly vary from what others might intend to convey. Especially if you find yourself struggling to make sense of information, don’t let your brain just construct meaning and move on. Pause instead and ask to clarify: “Sorry, when you say you’re from Bavaria, which part in particular?” or “What do you mean by that exctly?” or “Can you tell me a little bit more about XYZ?” This helps to clarify the situation before the misunderstanding actually becomes a problem. If you (or the other person) missed this mark, you moved on and eventually got stuck, again, just seek clarification. What you want to avoid though are any of these two statements:You haven’t expressed yourself clearlyYou haven’t listened properlyFrom my experience neither is ever solely the cause of misunderstandings, and trying to put blame onto one or the other party doesn’t help. My communication has significantly improved once I had learned that communication never is precise, it’s rather semi-sloppy at any given time. And by looking at it like this it got much better.

What are some good strategies with helping people read faster and retain more information?

Practice this exercise (I was taught as a kid by a grade four school teacher, and it has served me until now):take a text, any text that you don’t mind defacing (the first few times you literally have to write on the page, or highlight until you train your eye to recognize and jump to key words.go through a sentence and highlight or underline the key words. Choose from the most relevant: SUBJECT, VERB, and ADJECTIVE. The idea is that the rest is “filler”. Do not highlight descriptions. So for example: in the text below which is absolutely beautiful and one my my favorites… if I was reading it for work or school I would “highlight”: WORLD and CHANGED; MUCH and LOST; NONE and REMEMBER. That redacts as: “world changed, much lost, none remember” Those words are everything that matters in that paragraph. If the text was really thick and I was short on time, re-reading it a second time I would be more selective and pick only “world changed”. Once you have highlighted or underlined them, you have your eye scan the paragraph only seeing the words highlighted… jumping through the rest (it’s easier and more natural than it sounds) Of course reading for pleasure, the sheer joy of it, you would savor every word below… The world is changed: I feel it in the water, I feel it in the earth, I smell it in the air...Much that once was is lost, for none now live who remember it.

What are the best market penetration strategies for global web startups that entrepreneurs from developing countries can adopt to achieve market potential?

Could you clarify? Startup -even "tech strartup" is not one thing. Offering an underdeveloped country an internet radio or a platform for managing volunteer workforce, finance and aid distribution for NGOs, or building a social network with tools that are relevant to the realities of living in such nation are entirely different things that can fall under "tech startup".Furthermore, one cannot assume that these societies have anything else in common other than being poor, uneducated, possibly corrupt or mismanaged. The social structure, priorities, religion, commodities, education, hunger, gross national product, weather, life expectancy, health, war, water availability or historic traditions make Laos, Somalia, Kazakhstan, Yemen, Haiti, Afghanistan, and Honduras entirely different in every possible way. It would it would be preposterous to think that one penetration strategy work for all these places just because their index is officially considered "underdeveloped".That would be like asking for a single strategy to operate all vehicles with internal combustion engine, or a strategy to cook using an oven. An aircraft is nothing like a semi-trailer or a Seadoo except for having an internal combustion engine. Greek Moussaka has nothing in common with Peking duck or fresh baked bread -aside for being made or heated in an oven.Your question needs to at the very least specify the vertical and general demographic in order to get any useful answerUPDATE:Thanks for clarifying and changing the question format. I am keeping this old anwer here until I produce a new one as the points may still relate to this discussion, however Your Full Name make good points below. My only comment to Greg is that the end-user doe not need to be the one paying for the service, especially in poor nations. Governments, NGOs, multi national corporations and other interested parties may be the revenue source here. Again, it all depends on what type of startup this is. You also have to remember that the internet infrastructure, device age, technology education and other factors such as primitive banking system with no online access or ability to accept PayPal also affect penetration in such nation
