Which Major S Is Appropriate For My Career Plan

Torn between two majors/career paths?

I'm torn between majoring in Criminal Justice and majoring in Nursing. I'm a 17 year old guy about to enter my senior year of high school.

Criminal justice has always been my passion but it is viewed as a relatively "worthless" major. Regardless of what I decide, I plan on joining the military after college (ROTC during college, perhaps scholarship?) and the military would be valuable experience for a law enforcement career. I have always wanted to work in law enforcement but I am concerned about the financial aspect of it. Cops don't make very much and even if I do manage to move up the chain of command there is no guarantee I'll ever hit six figures and I want to live comfortably. I apologize if I sound like a spoiled brat.

On the other hand, I am considering majoring in nursing. I would be comfortable with it but it isn't my passion. I certainly have a lot more potential in a financial sense and I think I could find a nice niche for myself but I am concerned that I will end up hating it one day and regret not going into law enforcement. Again, I plan on joining the Army Nurse Corps after college if I choose nursing.

Basically I'm completely torn between my two potential career paths. Do I follow the money or do I do what I believe I'll love? I need to make a decision soon and obviously I am the only person who can make this decision but any advisement someone could offer I could really use right now. Thanks in advance.

Is MIS the right major for my career plan?

First of all, congrats on your long term plan! I wish I'd been so forward thinking in college. To provide some perspective based on your question, I majored in both MIS and Operations Management at Ohio State University. Post-college, I had a pretty wide ranging set of job options. For me, I did not feel limited at all by majoring in MIS. I think the best part of the major was that it encompassed both the business side and technology side of things which is a huge benefit these days. To be versed in both means you can market yourself as a liaison between business / IT. And from there, you can choose where you want to specialize. I don't think MIS limits you and I don't know anyone with the degree who works in a  call center (not sure where you got that idea from!). Based on your interest in data analytics, I would actually highly recommend MIS over Finance for undergrad. You'll get the exposure to computer science through MIS that you won't get via a Finance major. After undergrad, I ended up choosing to work at Accenture (a consulting firm), where you have endless options in terms of where you want to focus your career.  Consulting is also great way to get a lot of experience very quickly and I know a lot of consultants from Accenture who have gotten into top MBA programs.Have you thought about possibly double-majoring? MIS and Finance/Accounting?Hope this helps a bit.

What is the best career path for a finance major?

I don’t think there is a single best option. Certainly working in a firm that does financial planning would provide a good start. Working for larger businesses that need financial assistance in addition to CPA’s can be good starting places as well. There is a big difference between the CFA and an MBA. An MBA is usually an 18 month to 2 year program of courses that prepare you to handle a variety of business issues. Some programs allow you to concentrate on marketing, or finance, or economics or entrepreneurship. It is a general business education. The CFA is a qualification that results in a test that allows you tell people you are certified and a member of an organization that vets financial planners. You can certainly get both. If you want to remain in finance taking the CFA makes sense. If you want to broaden your business experience into a variety of industries, then an MBA can also be helpful. It depends ultimately on what you think you would like your career path to be.Regardless of what you do, Toast Masters is a great organization. It is an excellent training ground for improving your ability to speak “on your feet”, to present yourself in the best light and to be comfortable speaking in various situations.

What are some possible career paths for MIS majors?

As a MIS bachelor student, graduating in 2016, I think it's hard to draw a clear path for MIS majors. Because the world changes faster than our imagination. The career path has to change correspondingly. When I finished my intern and had lunch with my manager, I asked her is your career path the same as that you designed when you graduated from university? She denied. But to some extent, this question could be changed into what are some possible career  choices for MIS majors.

How do I go about finding a major or a career path to follow?

First of all sit down...take a deep breath. Okay better. Now learn one thing very very carefully.judge!! Judge everything you did...everything you want to do . Take a piece of paper and write down what you inspire to become. What you see yourself in future. You can see yourself as an astronaut , a musician ,an artist anything. Write it all down whatever their is in your mind. After this read your list and slowly slowly start to narrow down your options...narrow down to the thing which are more appealing to you and finally you will achieve your top interests. Now the tough part begin. Judge prudentially what are the things you can do...where your skills are good and where you would find the most satisfaction . start to search and learn about the life's of people in those proffesions and again think whether you want such life our not. All of us want to be famous and many of us dream to be a musician or an actor but here we have to judge do we have that fire , the spirit and the potential to do that job.Lastly it is important to have a plan from what I did to what I want to do. For example someone wants to be a doctor. He should make a map marking what he has done and what he wants to do and how will he do it. He starts with he takes bio...does well in it...clears several Olympiads...did some research ....wants to serve the society and by doing so and so can achieve his goal. If you are clear enough about a choice to such an extent where you know what you all need to do to achieve it you can easily achieve it.

In need of advice... college majors/careers?

I am studying to become a Respiratory Therapist. One reason I am doing so is because I really enjoy love helping people. I also enjoy writing. I wanted to become an English teacher at one point, but I never pursued it. There are really not many job opportunities here where I live; it is a very small town, many jobs are at least an hour to two hours away. The schools have teachers who have been there for a long time, and I know the prospects aren't that great. I have a strong desire to write, although I believe nothing will come of it. I know it sounds as though I just need a bit more faith in myself, but I'm writing to ask for advice.

Does anyone know any good jobs for English majors? I plan to finish Respiratory Therapy and then finish out my English degree (I started it but didn't complete it).

Any info is appreciated.

Thank you.

What's a good major for a pre-law student?

I'm starting my freshman year of college at Samford University, so I definately have some time to think about things before I really nail down a major, but I am kind of nervous. I'm currently undeclared pre-law, meaning I want to go into law but I haven't yet declared a major.

What are some of the best things to major in for a pre-law student? I'm trying to have a back-up plan so that the major I earn will get me a good career if for some reason I can't get into, or can't afford law school in 4 years. My university does offer a 5th year program for teaching. So that would mean I could major in history(as pre-law students often do),but go for a 5th year, and earn a master's degree in that field for teaching. I think that would be a good way to go so that I can still go to law school if that works out, but I would have a fairly stable, worthwhile career as a back-up plan in case it doesn't work out.

So can anyone give me some tips of suggestions? Would the plan I'm thinking about be useful/worthwhile?
