Which movie monster do you like better, King Kong or Godzilla?
Both are magnificent tragic characters.Kong was the only alpha species on his little island. Natives worshiped him, dinosaurs feared him, Kong was a god on his island.Until civilization knocks down his doors, captures and humiliates him, and then kills him and unceremoniously tosses him aside. A god, made into a sideshow freak. Disposed of when he attempts to assert himself.Really sad.Godzilla was a dinosaur who somehow survived every extinction level event since before humankind was even a thing.He was living peacefully on his little pacific island, but he had the bad fortune to live on the island where America would test out a couple of atomic bombs, irradiating the area and scarring him completely. the bombs also bestowed upon him massive size, strength, and a newfound hatred toward mankind.Cue roaring rampage of revenge on the nearest target, Tokyo.Then he gets killed.Really sad….I have no preference, they’re both great!

Made up for the movie, but the concept of these things going way back and one being a check on the other is deep in the DNA of kaiju films, though admittedly more Gamera and tokusatsu shows than Godzilla. Ghidorah, for example, was said to be the ancient destroyer of worlds, passing from planet to planet and ruining as it went. Mothra in later stories was an ancient guardian spirit against avatars of Ghidorah and other despoilers, including its own dark shadow, Battra.
