Why there is no value of a BSc degree in India?

How long does a law degree take in the uk, and do i have to attend law school after this?

In England and Wales, a full law degree normally takes three years. However, if you have an undergraduate degree in another subject already, you can do a law conversion course (usually called the CPE or PgDL), which takes only one year and effectively "converts" your degree into a law degree.

To become a qualified lawyer in England or Wales (Scotland has a different legal system), there are three steps:

(i) Get a law degree or convert your existing degree to one; then
(ii) Do a one-year professional qualification at law school; then
(iii) Complete a period of on-the-job training.

Steps (ii) and (iii) differ according to whether you want to be a barrister or a solicitor. To become a barrister, you need to study the one-year Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) at law school after you've finished your undergraduate degree. After you've done that, you can start work as a pupil barrister (this is called the "pupillage") in barristers' chambers. After one year working as a pupil barrister, you then become a "tenant" barrister, if you're kept on (i.e. a qualified barrister).

To become a solicitor, you'll need to study a one-year Legal Practice Course (LPC), rather than the BPTC, after you've finished your law conversion course; after that, you can start working as a trainee solicitor under a "training contract" with a law firm. After two years as a trainee, you'll become a qualified solicitor.

If you're considering a career in the law, I'd recommend you get work some experience at an early stage, so you can decide whether the law's for you and, if so, what kind of lawyer you want to be. It'll also give your CV a big boost when it comes to applying for jobs.

You might find the following website on studying law and getting a job useful: www.the-art-of-law.co.uk. Also, have a look at the Law Society and Bar Council websites for information on careers, etc.

Good luck!
