Modo is much better than Maya for hard surface modeling.

Blender has tools for modeling, sculpting, rigging, animation, and much, much more.

Blender has the most artist friendly and versatile UI of all 3D software; easy to modify for your specific needs. Blender also has the fastest workflow in the industry.

Unity 3D can import native Blender files (.blend).

The easiest and most detailed tutorial on how to use Blender is Neal Hirsig's tutorial at

Start with the first four lessons of Neal Hirsig's tutorial.

What are the Maya 3D software pros and cons?

Here is already a post about the pros and cons for both Maya and 3ds MaxHow do Maya and 3ds Max compare? What are the advantages and disadvantages in quality, usability, and features?

What are some good software packages that would be an alternative to Maya LT?

Didn't use Maya LT, but I've been hearing a lot of positive feedback about Blender (Free and Open 3D Creation Software) lately, and something tells me I won't stop hearing that so soon.I'll give it a shot myself, actually (and I know it's going to be painful, after 16 years of 3ds max). Also, while the $240 subscription per year doesn't sound awful, Blender is free.

I want to be an Indie game developer/designer. I just turned 30. Is it too late for me to learn new tools like Unity?

It's never to late to learn anything. Just apply yourself, don't expect things to come easily, and stay determined to reach your goal. That's what pretty much everyone will tell you. I'm going to take a more pessimistic approach. Let's assume you want a career in video game design.  To be honest, you'll have to get really good really fast to be able to get a solid job before 50.  This will be especially hard if you have no experience in anything related to game design.  If; however, you do have some experience in a field related in any way to game design, you still have a chance.  Try focusing on the aspects of game design which particularly interest you and you have the most prior knowledge of.Then again, if you just want to do game design as a hobby, go with the first paragraph.
