How to format a WRITE PROTECTED SD card ?

SOLUTION 1 - Unlock the memory card.

There is a Lock switch on the left side of the SD card. Make sure the Lock switch is slid up (unlock position). You will not be able to modify or delete the contents on the memory card if it is locked.

NOTE: If you are using a microSD/microSDHC card or a miniSD/miniSDHC card, insert the card into the microSD/miniSD adapter. The SD adapters will also have a lock switch.

SOLUTION 2 - Toggle the lock switch.

If the lock switch is loose and moves easily It is likely the switch is sliding to the locked position as the card is placed in your host device. In this case the card will need to be replaced.

Contact the manufacturer's support number to check warranty status.

SOLUTION 3 - Try to Format the card using Disk Manager (For all memory cards)

The data on the memory card may be corrupted. Format the card under Disk Management and then try to transfer files to the device once more.

WARNING: Formatting will delete all the files in the device. Backup all your data before formatting.

How to remove write protection from SD card?

Hi there,

I recently bought a Raspberry Pi and I've been itching to get it going. However, I encountered a very big problem, and that is I cant remove the write protection from the SD card so I can load the linux OS onto it. Here is what I've tried so far:

- making sure the lock slider is in the correct place (it is)
- formatting the card ( error message pops up saying disk is write protected)

I would really appreciate any help you could give me, even links to other responses.

Thanks for your time

Reformat write protected micro sd card?

MicroSD card does NOT have a write-protect. If it says write-protect, that means it's in failsafe mode because it had detected internal 'bad sectors' and it is NOT letting you write anything so you can still read off the data before it dies completely!

Copy off the data, and throw away the card. It's worthless now.

How do you remove write protection from an SD card?

I think you mistyped Ad for Sd. But no worries.1. Check the SD card's exterior (Or if micro Sd is used with Sd card adapter)Is there a small switch on one side? Changing the positioning should turn write protection off and let you change the contents.[SD cards are bigger than Microsds. Nowadays Sd cards are lesser used. Microsd are most common now. But some devices still have Sd card ports. So inorder to use it with microsd we use Sd adapter which looks like Sd card but has small opening to fit microsd in it.]2. Insert the memory stick [SD/Microsd]into the computer & check its propertiesGo to My Computer and under Devices with Removable Storage look for your card reader; right-click on it and click Properties. In the pop-up box, sometimes there's an option to Remove write-protection. Change the status of this option and try again.3. Use command lineRemove your memory stick [SD/Microsd] from the drive. Click Start > RunIn the box type regedit and press OKA new window will appear. Go to:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePoliciesDouble-click on Write Protect and change the Value Data to 0 and then click OKClose the Registry Editor and insert the memory stick into your computer. If you can't locate StorageDevicePolicies then you will need to create this folder; right-click on Control and click on New > Key; name this StorageDevicePolicies; right-click on the new folder you created called StorageDevicePolicies and click New > DWORD Value.Name this WriteProtectDouble-click on Write Protect and change the Value Data to 0 and then click OKClose the Registry Editor and insert the memory stick into your computer.Hope this helps. :)Ps: I am assuming you are using windows .Please be warned changing registry settings is risky .Please follow exactly as above.Do make a system restore point before doing this registry hack.

How to remove write protection from SD card?

It's apparent most people don't have a clue how to get around the "Disk Write Protect" error.

I can help. What is not the problem, is the position of the switch entirely. With the SD card Face up and the tiny white plastic switch on the left side, should be slid toward the card edge connector (the shortest side). I know you may have done this and it still doesn't work. Here's why, On the opposite side of the SD card from the switch, there is a tiny "Notch" cut out.

Place a piece of tape, masking, electrical, sometimes transparent will work. Be very precise in placing the tape over the notch, but not over the brass connector on the opposite side. Then place it in your card reader, format it, read and write files to your desire.

This is a little known issue with the design of all SD cards. The notch forces them to work in camera's, MP3 Players, PDA's, etc. that are portable devices, but not in USB card readers or computers with SD reader slots.

The card reader with the SD card has this extra built in feature to protect copyrights (for some reason on blank cards), and makes it useless for custom applications. Once you have "Unprotected" the SD card, installed your files, then remove the tape.

If you get the same error again after applying the tape, add a second layer. Double check that you did not cover the connection edge, and the plastic tab is closet to the side you insert in the device you are using.

Sometimes it takes several tries, but it will work with patience. If you have existing files on the SD card, insert it, right click, select properties. Then remove the "Read Only" check by the box and try to delete or add files then. If it says Disk Write Protected, then check the tape again.

It's annoying, but it will work with patience to bypass this design flaw.
