Who Or What Is The Best Way To Clean Up A Pc.from The Internet Suggestions Or A Pc Tech From Local

What is the best FREE way to clean viruses from your PC? And how do you check the startup programs?

To turn on and off programs at startup do the following:
Start > Run > msconfig
All programs that run at startup will be under the Startup tab. As for viruses and whatnot I would suggest you check out some of these anti-virus and anti-spyware software programs along with a couple other recommended programs:
-McAfee 12 in 1 Security Center (anti-virus)
or AVG if you want a free program
-Spyware Doctor with AV (anti-spyware)
or Spybot S&D if you want a free program
-PC Tools Firewall Plus(free) (firewall)
-ThreatFire(free) (added virus protection)
-CCleaner(keep computer running pretty good, cleans up history and whatnot)
-Firefox(safe browser)

All of the above programs(aside Spybot and AVG) I use and have been using for a very long time now, all with fantastic results. For AVG and Spybot they are both good in the way of free protection but McAfee and Spyware Doctor are recommended.

What is the best way to keep my computer clean (virus/malware wise)?

Answer all of the following questions as best you can please, if you can go into detail please do. Also, please substantiate any claims you make that could possibly be viewed as personal opinions (Ex. If you say a specific anti-virus software is good, why is that so? Do you own it and have used it for a decent amount of time? Have you found information from credible websites?)

~When I write anti-virus I mean any software that keeps harm from coming to your computer (anti-malware, anti-spyware ect.)

1. What are some of the best anti-virus programs to have? (Doesn't matter if it is free or not)

2. Is there a good combination of different anti-virus, programs (A system of software programs that when used together create a nice defense system that does not affect the memory or processing speed of a computer too much)

3. Is there something I specifically should do on my computer that possibly is not done by the software (anything that may require a human to accomplish)

Information Specifically about my computer: I am using an HP 620 lap top with windows 7 and Intel core duo processor

P.S. The reason I am asking these questions are because I am having problems with my current anti-virus software, Norton. It cannot open up and yet I cannot uninstall or re-install it, any ideas on what I should do about this issue? Do you think it is a good idea to re-format my hard drive? It is a relatively new computer with no truly important documents on it so it would not be a problem to re-install anything lost. Basically, if it might be easy to re-format, how do I get my computer back to the way it was when I bought it? I wouldn't want to loose any default programs that were on the computer when I got it. How would I go about this re-formatting if you think it is the right path.

If you choose to answer all of these, thank you so much, it would truly mean a lot to me and would be very much appreciated, I could help you in any way I can after these matters are resolved.

How do I clean up my computer so it runs faster. I have cleaned disks and defragedd but it is still super slow

Change the startup options in the software that runs as soon as the pc is rebooted. That is the problem with 95% of slow running pc's. Set it so that they will not startup when Windows is restarted. You can also use the run option and bring up msconfig. You do this by clicking start, then run. Tyep in MSCONFIG. Choose selective start up. But you have to be really careful when using that because sometimes people don't know what they are unchecking, so if you're not sure, don't fool with it! Also, try this: Select start, and then run... When it comes up, type this- chkdsk /f That is a command that tells the computer to do a diskcheck the next time the pc is restarted. That helps out too as it fixes any errors on the drive.
