Why Am I Getting Wi-fi Without A Router

How do I get on the Internet or WiFi without a router?

It’s hard to make sure of your meaning with this question. Here’s an answer that is technically correct: It is possible, but probably not with modern equipment. To get on the internet, you need a contract with a service provider, a modem, and a computer. You will need to connect your computer to the modem. A router is usually included with the modem, because it allows more than one device to share the internet connection. But it is not required if you don’t need to share the connection. If you want to connect with a phone, you will need WiFi. The router/modem usually has a WiFi access point. WiFi requires a router, because there is a built-in assumption that the WiFi signal will be available to more than one device. So, you can connect without a router provided you have a service contract, a modem, an Ethernet cable, and a computer. This is how dial-up connections used to work. The modem either was inside the computer, or connected with a serial cable.*However*, modern computers all use Ethernet, and assume a router will be available to set important Ethernet parameters. I’m not sure how one would get around this. Connecting without a router using modern equipment would be difficult at best, and maybe not possible. I don’t know of any Ethernet modem that doesn’t include a router. If that doesn’t answer your question, here’s an alternate answer. In the US, you can get on the internet for free at most public libraries, many stores, and some restaurants. Just connect your device to their public or guests WiFi. Sometimes their WiFi will require a password. Sometimes you will have to go to their site and accept their terms and conditions. Retail outlets sometimes limit the amount of time you can be connected. In this case, the library or store provides everything you need except the computer or phone (including a router). If you don’t have a computer, libraries will usually also make the computer available for free. None of these options will be fast enough for gaming, but it doesn’t get any more free than that.

How can you get WiFi without internet?

You buy a wireless router and power it up. By default, most home wireless routers are manufactured with WiFi enabled. The WiFi network name (SSID) and pass phrase should either be on the router’s label or in the user guide. There should also be a password that will allow you to log on to the router’s settings and change them, including changing the WiFi name and encryption details. Changing WiFi settings is best done from a PC connected by Ethernet. If you change WiFi settings over a WiFi connection and make a mistake, you may not be able to use the WiFi until the error is corrected. The ports on the router that normally provide the connection to the Internet are left unused.

Can I buy a router without buying some WiFi service?

"Just" buying a router without internet service is like "just' buying a cordless phone. It can be a very nice phone, but without phone service, it's a paperweight. You need:
1. An internet provider. Cable or DSL, typically - Comcast, Time Warner, AT&T or regional carriers. You need an account. They'll often provide at *least* a modem, and often a modem/router combination.
2. For sharing with multiple systems, a router - though as mentioned your internet provider may provide one. They may provide a wifi signal as well as cabled connections.
3. Ethernet cables, if you're hooking up that way.

As far as which router, if your ISP doesn't give you one, it depends on what you want and what your budget is. Linksys, Netgear and (more recently) Asus have been getting good reviews. Just look up "Home router review 2015" and browse the results - Tom's Hardware, PC Magazine and the like often review them.

How do I use a WiFi router without a phone jack?

How do i connect to online play for the ps4 without wifi via router? i only have a broadband form of internet?

Is your computer running Windows?

How do you want to connect to your PS4 - Ethernet or WiFi?

Does your computer already have this interface available? If not, then you should probably choose WiFi as it should be easier to find a suitable USB WiFi adapter, but make sure that the PS4 will work with an Ad Hoc WiFi network.

In the Network Connections on the computer, open the properties for the USB network adapter. On the Advanced tab, there should be a tick box to allow the computer to share its Internet connection. Once this is set up, and the computer has been rebooted, you should be able to connect the PS4 to your computer. If you are using an Ethernet connection between the PS4 and the computer, you will need a cross-over Ethernet cable.

I hope this helps.

Can you install a wireless router without a modem?

You can install a wireless router without a modem, and without needing an Internet connection. A wireless access point would achieve the same thing, and you may be able to get one of those cheaper than you could get a router. The down side to a WAP is that if you later decide to connect your network to the Internet, you'd need to purchase a router. Your computers will still be able to connect to the router and communicate with one another, but you won't be able to access the Internet unless you have a modem from an Internet service provider.
