Why Are Men Stereotyped As Being More Competent Than Women

MEN VS WOMEN: WHO IS BETTER?

Me with both hands tied behind my back.

What are some gender stereotypes that drive you absolutely nuts?

The stereotype that bothers me the most is that women mature faster than men. I’ve never been mature. Most of the 22 year old guys I go out with are more mature than I am.Also, one that bothers me is the stereotype that men like to chase and women should just sit back and wait. Fuck that. What if I want to chase? Assertiveness is a really good quality to have in life. How can we expect to get anything we want without going after it?I also feel like stereotypes are generally telling me I’m not good at being a woman. I started feeling like this when I was a kid. At 9 years old, I was playing four square during recess thinking, “I would be better at being a boy.” I used to get told I was too aggressive and too competitive. My biggest strengths are actually male-typical strengths. I am extremely good at math, or at least I used to be back when I was in school. I have 99th percentile spatial skills and I’m extremely good at directions. It’s almost like I have a built in compass.Meanwhile, my weaknesses are in areas where women are supposedly stronger. My communication skills are not great. While I genuinely care about people, I don’t have the most empathy. Half the time someone is mad at me, I have no idea why unless they tell me. I don’t really feel other people’s feelings. I think this is a strength because I never perceive any emotional burden of people come to me with their problems.Personally I think there’s nothing wrong with how I am. I have strengths and weaknesses just like everyone else. The thing that bothers me is how I’m assumed not to have my strengths based on my gender. And meanwhile, I am utterly failing at being so-called “feminine,” at least in some ways. Maybe I’m feminine in ways I don’t see.I seem much more like the guys answering the following question. I guess this is why I tend to have at least as many male friends as female friends. But it gets hard because I’ll never know who is really my friend or some guy just trying to put it in.Which gender stereotypes do you conform to?

How do male nurses feel about the stereotype that all nurses are female?

I think it’s great!I was 32 years old and single when I changed careers from welding to nursing school. For a 32 year old single man in nursing school, it was a “target rich environment”.Sorry, I digress.I don’t find the stereotype uncomfortable at all.For one thing, I’m comfortable with my own masculinity and who I am as a person and could care less about what other people think of me.I went from a dirty, unhealthy job of welding where I earned $12 per hour (about $24,000 per year in 1990) to almost double that income as a nurse in 1992.I then went to nurse anesthetist school and for the last 10 years I’ve earned ~ $250,000 per year as a CRNA (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist).Nursing is a great career with good working conditions and good earning potential. Men are also valued in this career field. I provide anesthesia mostly in labor and delivery where I perform epidurals labor and spinals for cesarean sections. I don’t feel that being male is a barrier in that practice at all.

Why are some women technically not so good as men?

Obvious reasonSame reasons why some men are technically not so good as othersConfounding reasonStereotype threatThe plain and simple answer to your question is that some women are technically not so good for the same reasons why some men are technically not so good. These could be anywhere from inherent intelligence to their actual interests lying elsewhere non-technical.On the other hand, if you are interested in why the distribution of technical skill levels of women is different, shifted to lower levels, from that of men, given everything else (like educational background, preparation, etc.) is the same, then your answer is: Stereotype threat.Several studies have shown that women easily show concern, succumb to the situation, and confirm the negative stereotype that women perform inferior to men.A study on chess players, for example, found that women players performed more poorly than expected when they were told they would be playing against a male opponent. In contrast, women who were told that their opponent was female performed as would be predicted by past ratings of performance. Female participants who were made aware of the stereotype of females performing worse at chess than male participants, performed worse in their chess games. This effect can actually be so potent that the mere presence of men can evoke stereotype threat. Women who took a mathematics exam along with two other women got 70% of the answers right; while those doing the same exam in the presence of two men got an average score of 55%.Checkout the Wikipedia page for more information: Stereotype threat

Being which gender is luckier you think? men or women?

I totally agree with you.....however, women have intuition and that is the power to sense things and read men's minds......something they could never do!!!!! LOL ;) EDIT: I sense a non-believer!!!! LOL:D

On this site, are women more articulate then men?

There might be MORE woman ON THIS SITE that articulate better but I don't think that the statement you made is true. There are men on this site that speak in a certain way that provokes you to answer.

For example, look at Richard- he expresses or states EXACTLY what he is thinking. He is an excellent comminicator.

MacSteed- he puts his thoughts into words, many words but words.

Schneb- he has a quite clear expressive language that touches you.

Benji Man: I've always found his answers quite intelligent & totally clear.

And you Patzy: You can really express yourself & therefore almost demand an intelligent response back. You are always thought provoking!

These are just 5 men, that I can think of off the top of my head, that stimulate my mind.

Do men have greater spatial/mathematical abilities than women?

Recent studies have shown that the left side of IPL in men's brains are larger than women's. And that,IPL's sizes are related to our mathematical, spatial and logical abilities. So, you could say men have better spatial/math abilities than women. But that doesnt mean men are always better at those subjects.

There are many women who are by far logically smarter, more reliable and more accurate than men when it comes to math and reasoning tasks. Its because they worked harder than men. Thats what matters.
