Why Are People Obsessed With Royalty

Why are people so obsessed with British Royal family?

A lot of the world has historical ties to the British Empire and (these days) the Commonwealth. While that doesn’t explain all of the interest everywhere, it surely explains part of it in some places.A lot of the rest of it, I’d honestly put down to “tabloid/gossip magazine mentality”. Just as a lot of people are - for reasons I can never quite understand - endlessly fascinated by the antics of people with the surname Kardashian, they’re also interested in the antics of the royals. Rewind the clock about two decades, in fact, and many of the royal family were the Kardashians of their day, having affairs and turning up in glamorous locations. Now they’re Charles and Camilla. The fascination with the current generation seems to stem from the same sources, as well as the fact that the two princes tend to be doing “good things”, broadly defined (yes, Harry was often in the news for doing the wrong thing, but he’s founded the Invictus Games, which seems to be a good thing), married to - or about to be - beautiful women and generally being respectable.

Why are people so obsessed with 'royalty'?

I'm going to assume you're really asking a question here, not just ranting. So let me play devil's advocate. :)

Royalty isn't just a privelige, it's also a responsibility. An often abused one, yes, but it serves its purpose. And titles? They are most definitely not worthless. It's about protecting the people who support you, providing a figurehead to praise or to blame, and running a group of people - which is bloody freaking hard.

And why do they get privileges? That one's about comparison. Which country/tribe, etc., is the richest? Which one is the most powerful? Obviously, it's the one who can afford to drape their king in diamonds - the idea being that a ruler who can entertain lavishly (who can practically throw away money) obviously has subjects who eat well and already have roofs over their heads. (Again, this one can be abused. I'm not denying that). The ruler who can do this sends a message of endless funds, which would tell others that he/she has practically unlimited resources for food, housing, clothing - or armies. It's about intimidation and showmanship, keeping allies interested in remaining allies and your enemies an ocean away.

The idea of heredity is a little annoying. If I had to make a guess, I'd say that things originally went through families under the assumption that a child is raised from infancy to take on this job, and is thus better equipped to handle it. This may not be true; I don't know, but there's a certain amount of logic to it.

(However, if that's the case, it obviously got corrupted very early on - people became certain it was blood that mattered, not experience and/or talent. So I concede to you on this one. But I also want to point out that one of the main evolutionary drives of mankind is to reproduce, to further your own blood - it could be argued that everyone wants their children to continue on as the parents did, to provide the parents with immortality of a sort. So you can't really get mad at kings for wanting their sons to be their heirs. Everybody wants that for their kids.)

All people may be equal, but they certainly aren't identical or interchangeable. They have different experiences, talents, and qualifications that make them who they are, which is why not just anybody can be head of state. I, for one, wouldn't want to be.

Why are people obsessed with British royalty?

They are modern celebrities and members of an anachronistic institution that still holds great meaning and symbolism for many people. As members of the British royal family, they are rich and famous. People will always be interested in their “betters”. We can live vicariously through them and imagine how our ordinary lives would be so much more fulfilling if we were them. So there is the fantasy aspect of being a king, queen, prince, or princess. There is also the interest in how they perform their roles as royals. Will they act responsibly and fulfill their royal duties, or behave as shallow, selfish wastrels? Are we superior to them in our middle-class conservatism and civic-mindedness? Will they be selfless, paragons of virtue? Will we strive to emulate them and will they bring out the best in us? Will their trials and tribulations make us feel more fortunate about our mundane lives? There is endless interest and fascination with members of the British royal family that is unlikely to fade because people enjoy the escape of imagining a fairy tale existence. They will continue to hold our interest long after the monarchy ends any meaningful role in our political and constitutional lives. The only way to become a royal is to be born one, or marry into the family. Pretty slim chance of that happening. So, better to fantasize about it and allow it to divert you from worrying all the time about your own common life.

Why are British people so obsessed with the royal family?

I read uk papers like the daily mail and the sun and everything is about the royal family. I mean the royal family are rich and have no real worries in life. Do all Brits obsess and think about the royal family all day and not about real important things in life? And that Kate is just average looking at best.

Why do people want to believe in ROYALTY?

Well, I guess because “ROYALTY” exists in some countries. For example, in the UK we have a constitutional monarchy, a Queen (God bless her!) and a Royal Family. It would be troubling for me not to believe in them, if only because I have met some.Still, I am open to persuasion that they are alien Saurians wearing human skin-suits. But not that they are mythological creatures who do not exist.

Why does Quora have such an obsession with the British royalty?

Why are Americans so obsessed with British royalty?

I was just reading how 'thousands' of Americans are gathering to get a glimpse of the Queen as she tours America. I thought Americans were anti-Monarchy?? I thought this was why you fought your War of Independence??

Citizens of countries where Queen Elizabeth II is the head of state -- Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand -- seem to make FAR less of a big deal about royal visits than Americans do, and they have nothing to do with your country.

Once again, the mentality of the USA escapes me.
